THE PERFECT DIGITAL DEATHWORLD UNFOLDS IN IMMERCENARY

SAN MATEO, Calif., March 17, 1995 -- The dark side of virtual reality and
gaming addiction is explored in the latest release from Electronic Arts
for the 3DO Interactive Multiplayer. Immercenary takes the player on a
trip to a virtual battleground of the future known as Perfect. The danger
of being immersed in gameplay to the point of addiction sets the stage for
the story that follows.

The action begins as the player takes the role of a modern-day mercenary
sent to shut down a deadly operating system existing in the Earth's
future. Like HAL on steroids, Perfect1 (the SysOp of this virtual world)
has reduced life to a deadly struggle for survival and supremacy. Human
minds have been thrust into this battlefield of brutal combat and, unable
to unhook from the network, their physical bodies gradually deteriorate
and die while the game plays on. The inhabitants are known as Rithms and
their rank within Perfect is mirrored by their form; the closer they are
to Perfect1, the more human-like they appear -- and the greater their
potential power.

Recruited by the PIC (Project for Intertemporal Communication), the
Immercenary is chosen for his expertise in combat, knowledge of virtual
reality, parapsychological ability, and strategic savvy. Known as Number
Five because of the four who have failed before him, this digital
soldier-of-fortune's mission is to overcome the unique combat tactics of
17 different enemy Rithms, including 11 digitized bosses. His ultimate
goal is to rise through the ranks of this Darwinian cyberstate while
increasing his DOA (Defense, Offense, Agility) in preparation for the
final deathmatch with Perfect1.

Gameplay is fast and fierce, the tension mounts when the player finds
himself alone in a virtual Armageddon. Pitted against a seemingly endless
army of electronic enemies, the player must adapt to this alien world to
survive. To aid the player, the storyline unravels through a video
introduction and segues between key battles. These also provide valuable
tactics and tips to aid the Immercenary's survival against the sinister
SysOp of this digital deathworld. Also, a conversation mode lets the
Immercenary talk to and learn from the other inhabitants trapped in this
hierarchical hell.

Immercenary is a first-person, real-time combat game that deftly combines
action, strategy, and story. It takes an intense look at the horrifying
possibilities of an autocratic future society existing within the confines
of an inescapable virtual 'game' and suggests a path that could be part of
our own future. Electronic Arts Producer Jim Simmons set out to explore
these possibilities, "By combining the mental depth of strategy games with
the visceral paranoia and aggression of real-time combat games, we tried
to create a level of tension that supports our story about the dark side
of technology addiction."

Immercenary was created by the talented team of Five Miles Out and produced
by Jim Simmons at Electronic Arts.

Immercenary is available now for the 3DO Multiplayer System.
