New York 1 News & The New York Times Company Team Up With Vicarious To
Produce "New York Time Capsule, 1994"

NEW YORK (Jan. 15, 1995) -- What were the most important New York news
stories of 1994 and what's the best way to revisit them in 1995 and
beyond?

For multimedia users, the answer is New York Time Capsule 1994, a new
CD-ROM look back at the year just past, produced jointly by New York 1
News, Time Warner's all-news TV channel in New York City, The New York
Times Company and Vicarious, Inc., a premier publisher of interactive
reference software titles.

The special CD ROM, slated to go on sale later this month, offers
highlights of more than 75 newsmaking events and rites of passage that
shaped New York City in 1994 -- from the inauguration of Rudolph Giuliani
as the city's first Republican Mayor in memory to the riveting hearings
into police corruption conducted by the Mollen Commission.

The super-season finishes of the New York Knicks and Rangers will be
recalled, as well as the passings of prominent New Yorkers and the birth
of a new Broadway season. The program includes stories pegged to City
News, Politics, Business, Sports, Culture and People, as well as some of
the year's more offbeat New York tales. There is also plenty of New York
controversy -- from striking ballplayers, hockey players, and legal aid
lawyers to the subway bombing that rocked New York commuters in December.

Steve Rago, group director for New Media at the New York Times Information
Services Group said: "As a 'time capsule' of New York in 1994, this CD-ROM
yearbook makes strong use of the comprehensive regional news coverage of
The Times along with the trail-blazing local TV journalism of New York
1."

Program segments will include video excerpts of New York 1's originally
televised coverage, along with text and photo accounts of each story as
reported in The New York Times. Stories can be accessed alphabetically, as
well as by category icons (Politics, Sports, etc.), date, and headline.
The video portions can be zoom-enlarged for full-screen viewing.

Follow-Up To Successful CNN Time Capsule

Vicarious, Inc. of Redwood City, CA is the software publisher behind the
CD-ROM yearbook. Vicarious has issued a CD-ROM Time Capsule product
highlighting national and international news stories in conjunction with
Cable News Network and U.S. News & World Report and previously developed
the NFL's Greatest Hits CD ROM for Turner Interactive.

In creating a CD product geared for New York, Vicarious turned to The New
York Times Company and New York 1, the 24-hour cable channel launched by
Time Warner in 1992 to exclusively cover news of New York City. The two
news organizations worked closely together in selecting which stories,
events and issues to preserve from the past year.

New York 1 news director Phil O'Brien, along with executive producer Art
Daley were given the task of selecting which video segments to feature
from among the station's exhaustive log of '94 coverage. Text portions
were chosen and edited by longtime New York Times urban affairs
correspondent Sam Roberts. Mr. Roberts is a regular presence on New York
1, co-hosting the popular nightly newsmaker program, "New York Close-Up."

Steve Paulus, vice president of programming for New York 1, called the Time
Capsule CD "a vivid documentary reference for New Yorkers and for news
hounds everywhere with an interest in New York. It's also the best
year-end review of city events you're likely to see for 1994. We're
especially pleased to have The New York Times as a partner in producing
what we hope is the first of a long line of multimedia yearbooks into the
next century."

Mr. Paulus credited The New York Times Information Services Group for
marketing of the Time Capsule CD ROM. The Information Services Group
develops new markets for the Times's news and information, including
applications that utilize emerging technologies. NYT New Media and New
Products is currently developing other CD-ROM products and created @times,
an online service of the New York Times for America Online. The
Information Services Group also operates The New York Times News Service
and Syndicate, NYT Custom Publishing, TimesFax, NYT Business Information
Services, The Times Index and Times On-Line Services.
