RACAL-DATACOM EXCALIBUR TWO-WIRE TERMINAL ADAPTER DESIGNED FOR
NETWORK-MANAGED MULTINATIONAL ISDN

March 6, 1995 -- SUNRISE, FL. -- Growth of ISDN (Integrated Services
Digital Networks) has been expanding steadily in Europe and is again
heating up in North America. To equip organizations to take advantage of
the benefits of ISDN in multinational networks, Racal-Datacom introduces
Excalibur BRI 2000 terminal adapter.

Besides its multinational interoperability, BRI 2000 offers two other
premier advantages: diagnostics at three levels and security at two
levels.

The BRI 2000 is an expansion of Racal's market-leading Excalibur Digital
Access Product (DAP) line. It provides an interface for two-wire ("U")
Basic Rate ISDN service in the United States and Canada, and joins Racal's
DAP 4100 ISDN ("S") Terminal Adapter widely sold in Europe, making it
possible to have a fully network managed multinational ISDN network.

The BRI 2000 two-wire ("U") access eliminates the expense of an external
network termination unit (NTU-1) for American and Canadian users. ISDN
adapters have traditionally been manufactured with four-wire "S" interface
for European networks, but this required a separate NTU box for North
American use.

"The media interest in the Information Highway has spawned a renewed
interest in ISDN," said Heather Vaughn, product manager. "And there are
clear advantages to using ISDN today. Circuit switched data (CSD),
graphics and images can travel over a single circuit at higher speeds than
are available with analog circuits. It's end-to-end digital
communications, yet you pay only for what you need!"

North American carriers today are making commitments to deploy ISDN service
more aggressively. There is pressure to price these services more
uniformly across the nation. New rules are being passed by local, county
and state governments to encourage telecommuting, and many employees are
urging more use of remote offices. These two trends lead to new
applications that increase demand for high-speed ISDN services from the
telephone carriers.

Two-wire access makes the BRI 2000 compatible with any two-wire Switched 56
DSU (digital service unit), four-wire Switched 56 DSU, and other vendors'
ISDN terminal adapters.

"BRI 2000 is a dual port ISDN terminal adapter, offering the economic and
efficiency benefits of switched services without forcing a user to lose
network management, diagnostics or security," Vaughn said.

Basic Rate service provides a two-wire circuit with two full-duplex 64 Kbps
channels (ISDN B channels) for carrying data and a full duplex 16 Kbps
access channel (D channel) for control or signalling information and
packet switched data.

NETWORK MANAGEMENT -- MULTIPLE OPTIONS

While it offers quick configuration from its front panel, BRI 2000 also can
be network managed by the CMS 400 Racal Management System. CMS features
include network map, auto learn network, monitor EIA, display and request
alarms, initialize units, front panel emulation, strap menu and restoral
menu.

DIAGNOSTICS

Racal provides diagnostics at three levels, providing more thorough
assistance for uptime operation than currently offered by competing
terminal adapters.

* Hardware diagnostics. The BRI 2000 diagnoses hardware failures within the
components, either the entire product or a specific board, by means of
self-tests at power-up

* System diagnostics. BRI 2000 can also troubleshoot the network or the
far-end device. It can even place a diagnostic call if it is off-line.
System self-tests can be initiated from CMS 400 component of the Racal
Management System, by AT commands or from the front panel.

* Network diagnostics. Testing and evaluation of the BRI 2000 can be
initiated by the carrier/telco network.

SECURITY

Security is provided for BRI 2000 users at two levels.

* Routine security is handled by call line identification (CLID), also
known as automatic number identification (ANI). The calling unit's
telephone number is transmitted during the ring cycle. The answering unit
compares the received CLID against an authorized stored list. If the CLID
is a valid number, the data is transmitted. BRI 2000 supports 50 caller
line identifications for each of its two DTE ports.

* Password security goes a second step deeper into secure operation. The
answering unit receives the CLID and then inquires if the person making
the call is the authorized user of that number. The authorized user is
able to reply with an authentic alphanumeric password. The caller knowing
the password is able to receive the data.

APPLICATIONS

Four popular applications are ideal for the BRI 2000:

* Leased line back-up: Most ISDN lines used today are deployed for backup
of dedicated circuits. The BRI 2000 offers quick, convenient, network
managed and secure back-up of pre-installed leased line equipment.

* File transfer: Another popular application utilizes ISDN for high-speed
file, graphic or image transfer.

* Disaster recovery: Racal previously introduced its DAP with ISDN backup.
If a DDS line is cut, this backup capability enables the network to switch
from DDS to ISDN circuitry. If it is a lengthy disaster, such as an
earthquake or hurricane, that keeps a remote office out of operation for
an extended period of time, the BRI 2000 can be used in a remote office to
access a central site or another remote site using either BRI 2000 or a
DAP with ISDN backup. That means BRI 2000 can enable a network to get back
into operation with a minimum of recovery hardships.

* Remote LAN access: As telecommuting, remote office and home-office use
increase, the need to transfer data between the main office mainframe and
client-server local area networking similarly increases. Where the highest
speed analog modem moves data at 28.8 kilobits per second, ISDN moves data
digitally at up to 128 K. To enable remote LAN access by ISDN circuits,
the BRI 2000 works with the Shiva Corp. LanRovers, remote access
communications servers providing LAN-like client-server connections. This
entire package works under a common network management platform, callback
security and password security.

List price for the Excalibur BRI 2000 is $1,195, available now.

BRI 2000 complies with Bellcore National ISDN-1 (NII), Northern Telecom and
AT&T industry standards in the United States and Canada and is compatible
with European standards at 56 Kbps. It is not switch dependent, since it
can be strapped from its front panel to work with a Northern Telecom or
AT&T ISDN switch or N-1 protocol.

Dialing interfaces include front panel, DTE signals, Hayes AT, and V.25bis
sync. These interfaces enable the BRI 2000 to be used for personal
computers at work or on-the-road. It also has dialing capabilities for
bridge/routers.
