Latin America Software Sales Reach $152 Million in 1994

Doubling of Sales in Brazil Paces Growth

March 20, 1995 (Washington, DC) - The Software Publishers Association (SPA)
announced today that US publishers' sales of personal computer application
software reached $152 million in Latin America in 1994, a 48% increase
from 1993. For the fourth quarter of 1994 (Q4 '94), sales were $49
million, a 74% increase from the fourth quarter of 1993 (Q3 93). Unit
sales increased 112% for Q4 '94 and 148% for the full year.

Sales up Strongly In All Parts of the Region

SPA sales reports for Latin America are able to separate three regions:
Brazil, Mexico and all other Latin American countries. Sales in all three
were up sharply in the Q4 '94 period. Sales in Brazil were up 115% to
$16.9 million in Q4 '94, while full year sales were $41.2 million (up
104%). In Mexico, sales were $13.0 million (up 64%) for the quarter and
$48.1 million (up 30%) for the year. Total sales in other Latin American
markets were $62.6 million for the year (up 37%), and $19.4 million for Q4
'94 (up 55%).

Windows Applications Account for the Majority of Sales

Windows applications accounted for the majority of application software
sales in Latin America in 1994. Sales of Windows applications were $130
million, an 86% increase over 1993. Windows sales accounted for about
seven in eight (86%) application software dollars spent in Latin America
in Q3 '94. Windows applications sales in Q4 '94 were $43.0 million, double
the sales recorded Q4 '93.

Windows applications clearly drive US firms' sales in Latin America. For
1994, DOS application sales fell 44% to $14.7 million. Q4 '94 DOS
Application sales were $4.0 million, down only 26%.

Macintosh applications have a fairly minor presence in Latin America,
accounting for between 3 and 4% of application sales. Macintosh
application sales have had an uneven year in Latin America: Sales were up
in Q2 (+19%) and Q4 (+28%), but down in Q1 (-15%) and Q3 (-31%). For the
year, Macintosh application sales were down 4% at $5.2 million.

"Latin American countries continue to be a source of rapid sales growth for
US software publishers," said SPA Research Director David Tremblay.
"Weakness in the Peso may limit the growth in Mexico in 1995, but Brazil
is on course to become a major market for US software."

Sales data reported are from the SPA's International Data Program, and
represent total revenues in these regions of the forty primarily US-based
software firms participating in the SPA's International Data Program. The
companies submit their confidential sales data to the accounting firm of
Arthur Andersen, which prepares the report for the SPA. Among the
participants are Adobe, Borland, Claris, Lotus, Microsoft, Software
Publishing, Symantec, and the WordPerfect Division of Novell. While US
companies have the dominant market share in most of these regions, the
figures reported should not be taken as an estimate of the total market
size. Rather, they represent total sales of the reporting companies.
