BEJIING COMMODITIES EXCHANGE STANDARDIZES ON SYBASE

BCE Trading System Implements Sybase Client/Server Solution Over Oracle and
Informix

EMERYVILLE, CA, February 28, 1995 -- Sybase, Inc., The Enterprise
Client/Server Company, today announced that the Bejiing Commodities
Exchange (BCE), currently the largest Chinese futures market, has
standardized on SYBASE technology for its on-line trading and transaction
system. The BCE Trading System, which handles trading, accounts
settlement, risk control and information analysis for four different
trading pools in more than 20 different commodities, is based on a
powerful client/server architecture running SYBASE SQL Server. The BCE
Trading System, with a current daily transaction volume of $2.2 billion
U.S. dollars, has now been in operation for over a year.

The BCE selected Sybase's SQL Server relational database management system
(RDBMS) after evaluation and comparisons with both Oracle and Informix
database software. The developer of the BCE Trading System, Professor Wu
Jianping of the Department of Computer Sciences of Qinghua University,
directed the extensive testing program, which was conducted by a task
force of users and commissioned specialists. The testing focused on the
key criteria of performance, interoperability and customer support.

"We selected SYBASE over Oracle and Informix after exhaustive testing,"
said Professor Jianping. "SYBASE was superior in performance and offered
us the flexible architecture critical to developing such an extensive
on-line system such as the BCE Trading System."

"We are extremely satisfied with Sybase's advanced, powerful technology and
high-quality service and we look forward to continuing a long-term
relationship with Sybase for our future client/server solution needs,"
said Gang Qing, the director of the BCE.

On-Line Trading System Key to Chinese Exchange's Success

The Chinese economic system has recently experienced a transformation that
has resulted in a re-emergence of mercantile exchanges, including the BCE,
which is China's largest futures market and one of the biggest in Asia.
Because the BCE is linked with foreign trade systems, it is essential for
them to foster trading that is viable at an international level. BCE
needed to develop an on-line trading system that increased trade
efficiency, lowered trade costs, and delivered timely price information.
The computer system they built, based on a client/server architecture
running SQL Server, increases the BCE's efficiency and productivity
through the enabling of on-line information delivery, communications and
transactions.

"We are pleased that BCE has decided to standardize on SYBASE for its
mission critical computing system," said Dominic Gattuso Jr., senior vice
president and general manager of worldwide sales and field operations. "In
fact, the director of a major U.S. commodities exchange recently visited
the BCE and gave high marks to the software environment, the system
interfaces, and the performance of the overall system."

Sybase as the Foundation for the BCE Trading System

The BCE Trading System, which has 400 seats, is based on Sun SPARCservers
running Sybase SQL Server. The client workstations, which are 486/33s,
feature easy-to-use interfaces developed using PowerBuilder, a Windows
development tool from Powersoft, a subsidiary of Sybase. With this
client/server on-line system, traders can submit trading requests on the
basis of price changes continually displayed on the clients. The computer
trading system then automatically reconciles and concludes these
transactions in accordance with price fluctuations and timing. Finally, a
transaction conclusion agreement automatically feeds into the accounts
settlement system.

Because of SYBASE's unique server programming capacity, the BCE Trading
System features extensive on-line transaction processing (OLTP) demands.
This advanced technology enables the system to reconcile one transaction
every two seconds.

Currently, four of the five Sun servers being used are responsible for
simultaneous trading in more than 20 commodities in the four trading
pools. The other server is responsible for venture capital funds and
accounts settlement processing. The clients are enabled to use the
distributed processing capacity of Sybase to carry out trading across the
BCE pools, in the many commodities.
