Malaysia's Second-Largest Bank Standardizes on SYBASE

SYBASE System 10 Product Family Providing Foundation Technology for Bank
Bumiputra's Migration to Enterprise Client/Server Architecture

SAN FRANCISCO, CA, March 20, 1995 -- Sybase, Inc., the Enterprise
Client/Server Company, today announced that Malaysia's Bank Bumiputra has
chosen SYBASE System 10 product family as the database standard for its
migration to an enterprise client/server architecture. Bank Bumiputra is
Malaysia's second largest bank, with more than two million customers.

With the SYBASE System 10 relational database management system (RDBMS) as
the enterprise backbone, Bank Bumiputra will be rolling out corporate
client/server applications to more than 5,000 users over the next three
years. Sybase's Open Client, Open Server, and OmniSQL Gateway connectivity
products will provide critical interoperability among existing databases,
and Replication Server will provide data synchronization among the bank's
200 branches.

"We haven't invested substantially in our information infrastructure in
quite a while, due to the difficult times our industry has experienced in
the last decade," said Osman Marzuki, general manager information
technology of Bank Bumiputra. "Migrating to client/server architecture
will move us from 1970s to 1990s technology, and will give us the
technological wherewithal to achieve leadership in Malaysia's banking
industry. Only SYBASE could provide the performance, reliability,
security, and integrity to make this a reality."

"Banking is one of two industries in Malaysia that present an important
market opportunity for Sybase, the other being telecommunications," said
Dominic Gattuso, vice president and general manager of worldwide sales and
field operations. "Malaysia is growing rapidly and many companies, like
Bumiputra Bank, are ready to make substantial investments in information
technology. And in many cases, these companies have few legacy systems
that have to be integrated with the new architecture, so they have an
extra advantage."

Bank Bumiputra's Client/Server Applications

In an evolutionary process over the next three years, Bank Bumiputra will
migrate its most strategic corporate applications--a customer information
system and a loan management application--off legacy systems and into a
client/server architecture. SYBASE SQL Server will continue to access
mainframe and other legacy databases via Open Server, Open Client, and
OmniSQL Gateway until those data sources are gradually phased out. Also,
SYBASE will access an existing ORACLE human resources application as
necessary via gateways. Replication Server will provide two-way data
synchronization between the head office, regional centers, and branch
banks.

SQL Server will eventually be distributed to at least 400 servers with up
to 5,000 internal users. Microsoft's Windows NT will provide the platform
for low-end servers at the branches, while UNIX workstations will serve as
high-end, centralized servers at the head office.

The customer information system will provide a centralized location for all
employees who need to access customer data, including tellers, managers,
and loan officers, and will be tightly integrated with the loan management
system. Loan officers will be able to access the loan management system to
retrieve real-time data on customer history, interest rates, and other
loan information with the goal of drastically reducing loan processing
time. Loan officers will also be able to monitor delinquent or
non-performing loans (NPLs) more effectively, and to take proactive steps
to ensure that a loan will not become delinquent in the first place.
"We're counting on this system to help us reduce our loan processing time
from weeks to minutes, and to drastically reduce our NPL percentage. These
are true competitive differentiators," said Osman Marzuki, general manager
information technology of Bank Bumiputra. "If we can reduce our NPLs by
only a couple of percentage points, we can realize hundreds of millions of
dollars in savings."

Why Bank Bumiputra Chose Sybase

After evaluating SYBASE SQL Server and ORACLE, Bank Bumiputra chose SYBASE
because of its true client/server architecture, connectivity to other
client tools and data sources, and completeness of its tools. Other key
SYBASE advantages are its ability to scale from the workgroup to the
enterprise, superior levels of performance, and data integrity features.
