TANDEM TO DEVELOP HIGH-RELIABILITY, SCALABLE WINDOWS NT IMPLEMENTATION FOR
ENTERPRISE SERVERS EXTENDING REACH OF WINDOWS NT SERVER INTO
BUSINESS-CRITICAL APPLICATION AREAS

CUPERTINO, Calif.-- March 8, 1995 -- Tandem Computers Incorporated and
Microsoft Corporation today announced that Tandem has licensed source code
for Microsoft Windows NT Server operating network system. Tandem will be
making key enhancements to Windows NT Server in the areas of high
availability, data integrity and scalability, in order to extend the reach
of Windows NT-based solutions in the business-critical applications

Tandem also announced it has established a new Windows NT Server Business
Unit, to leverage Tandem's twenty years of high-reliability,
business-critical computing experience in the fast growing Windows

applications need the robustness that Tandem has traditionally provided
and I believe that both Tandem and Microsoft customers can benefit from
this relationship."

Tandem senior vice president of sales and support, Jerry Peterson, said,
"The new licensing agreement and new Business Unit reinforce our
commitment to Windows NT as a strategic operating system environment,
alongside our existing NonStop Kernel and UNIX open environments. We are
aligned with an explosive growth opportunity that will greatly benefit
from Tandem's fundamental strengths, and which will in turn enhance
Tandem's position in such key markets as finance, retail, and
telecommunications."

"Tandem will help us extend the reach of our BackOffice products by
bringing its unmatched experience in continuously available, highly
scalable servers to bear on this high-growth application sector," said
Microsoft executive vice president of worldwide sales and support group,
Steve Ballmer. "We look forward to working with Tandem to expand our
mutual opportunities for growth."
