Adobe to Optimize Acrobat Integration and Performance on the Internet

Alliances with Internet industry leaders expand Acrobat capabilities for
electronic publishing

Mountain View, Calif., (September 26, 1995) -- Adobe Systems Incorporated
today announced an enhanced version of Adobe Acrobat technology,
code-named "Amber," that will enable customers to create and distribute
fully formatted, professional quality documents that are completely
integrated with the viewing, searching and linking capabilities supported
by the World Wide Web. In addition, "Amber" will optimize documents in the
Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) for fast downloading and displaying
across the Internet, on-line services and corporate networks.

Adobe also disclosed alliances with key software developers including
Fulcrum Technologies, Inc. and Open Market, to integrate "Amber"
functionality with a variety of Internet and corporate application
software. These companies join the increasing number of industry leaders,
including Apple Computer, AT&T, Microsoft Corporation, Netscape
Communications Corporation, Personal Library Software, Inc., Profound,
Inc. and Verity, Inc., that are working with Adobe to incorporate Acrobat
functionality with their Internet and on-line products and services.

"Amber sets a new standard for commercial quality publishing on the
Internet," said John Warnock chairman and CEO, Adobe Systems Incorporated.
"Corporations will be able to use industry standard authoring tools to
create and distribute rich, interactive information that works seamlessly
with the powerful distribution mechanisms of the World Wide Web."

Extended API Enables New Levels of Web Integration

"Amber" extends the Acrobat Application Programming Interface (API) to
provide new levels of integration with other software applications.
"Amber"-enabled applications will be able view PDF documents directly
within the application's window without having to launch Acrobat as a
separate helper application. Products ranging from Web browsers, workgroup
applications and on-line services will be able to provide seamless access
to the rich content available in PDF while continuing to support other
file types, such as Hypertext Markup Language (HTML). Combined with
Acrobat Weblink, a feature which enables PDF files to contain hypertext
links to any other supported file type on the World Wide Web, and Acrobat
software's support for a variety of Web searching and indexing tools,
"Amber" will deliver a universal electronic publishing solution completely
integrated with the Web.

"Amber" optimizes PDF files for electronic delivery by enabling individual
pages to be progressively downloaded and displayed. With optimized PDF
files, users will be able to retrieve and view only the pages they want to
see in any given document. "Amber" downloads only the bytes necessary to
display any given page. Optimized PDF files will render text first while
larger objects, such as images, will be downloaded in the background and
rendered last.

Strong Third Party Support for "Amber"

Fulcrum Technologies, Inc., a leading vendor of content-based retrieval
software in the client-server marketplace, announced it will support the
PDF file format in the next release of its flagship product, Fulcrum
SearchServer. With Fulcrum's PDF support, information providers will be
able to use Fulcrum's SurfBoard to search-enable their Internet and World
Wide Web sites, including PDF document collections at these sites. Fulcrum
SurfBoard combines Fulcrum's SearchServer text-retrieval engine with
Internet access protocols so that popular browsers can be used to search
indexed Web and Internet sites. This capability was developed for Fulcrum
by MEREX, Inc., a leading document systems developer and integrator.

Open Market, Inc. announced it intends to support PDF in the next release
of its WebServer product family. The implementation supports Acrobat
"Amber's" capability to progressively download individual PDF pages and
will result in highly responsive performance for users accessing Acrobat
documents stored on Open Market servers.

"The ability to quickly display documents using Adobe Acrobat technology is
consistent with our focus on industrial-strength software for enterprise
applications and electronic commerce," said Robert Weinberger, Open
Market's VP of Marketing. "Our implementation also meets the strict
requirements of our high-performance server architecture. We are pleased
to have achieved both objectives."

Adobe will make a prototype "Amber" version of Acrobat Reader publicly
available on Adobe's World Wide Web server (http://www.adobe.com/) in the
next 30 days, with revisions to follow over the next several months. The
first prototype will be a Microsoft Windows application supported by beta
versions of Netscape Navigator 2.0 for Windows 95 and Windows NT.
Demonstration PDF files which have been optimized for fast downloading
will also be available on Adobe's Web site. "Amber" will be incorporated
into a future release of Acrobat software, expected to be available in the
first half of 1996. The APIs required to support "Amber" functionality
will be documented in the Acrobat Plug-Ins SDK and are expected to be
available at the same time.
