ANSOFT SHIPS INDUSTRY'S FIRST ELECTROMECHANICAL SYSTEM SIMULATOR FOR DESIGN
ENGINEERS

EMSS offers the industry's first transient solutions for total
electromechanical system simulation.

PITTSBURGH, PA -- October 16, 1995 --Ansoft Corporation, the leading
supplier of electromagnetic field simulation-based electromechanical
(Maxwell EM) and signal integrity (Maxwell SI) design tools, announces the
shipment of EMSS (Electromechanical System Simulator).

EMSS bridges the gap between electrical, mechanical and electronic
engineers with one easy-to-use package. Design engineers analyze the total
behavior of a system including the electromagnetic device and the
electronic drive controller. Applications include solenoids, transformers,
sensors, and a host of other electromechanical devices.

The traditional time-stepping process is replaced with new technology,
allowing the engineer to test and redesign mechanical loads and power
electronic drives in minutes instead of hours. Engineers can now evaluate
a multitude of design alternatives in minutes to ensure optimal system
performance.

Customer Response

Ansoft users representing General Motors (Delphi Electronics and Packard
Electric), Automatic Switch, Hi-Stat Manufacturing, Rostra Precision
Controls, Bicron Electronics, and Virginia Power Electronics Center
participated in beta-site training and testing.

Initial response to the product has been overwhelming. Test results are
matching measured results and the beta-site users are able to move forward
into transient design.

"Ansoft's EMSS has greatly enhanced ASCO's ability to meet customer
requirements by enabling the solution of dynamic solenoid design and
analysis problems where previously only static solutions had been
possible," said Stan Roedel, Senior Product Engineer at Automatic Switch
Company.

Rudy Severns, a consultant with Springtime Enterprises, Inc. stated, "A
recurring problem in the simulation of power electronic circuits is
obtaining an accurate model for the non-linear magnetic components.
Ansoft's ability to address this need with EMSS is a significant step in
improving circuit simulation accuracy and its value to design engineers."

EMSS Product Features

Ansoft's EMSS is a significant technology advance in the design and
analysis of electromechanical systems. EMSS combines finite element
analysis (FEA), mechanical dynamics and electronic circuit equations in a
comprehensive, easy-to-use software package for electrical and mechanical
engineers.

EMSS includes a schematic capture module to drive transient simulations,
offering graphical editing of electrical circuit models with automatic
node numbering. Magnetic FEA simulations need only be completed once and
used for both initial conditions and time domain simulations - saving
critical design time.

EMSS eliminates the traditional time-stepping process implemented in other
packages when attempting to solve the electromagnetic transients problem.
The drawback of the time-stepping approach is dealing with long solution
times every time a change is made to the mechanical load or the power
electronics drive. Hours are lost waiting for results. By solving the
electromagnetic fields within the device using highly accurate finite
element analysis techniques, EMSS automatically creates an equivalent
circuit model of the device and allows system simulations to run within
Maxwell SPICE or Analogy's Saber so that changes to the system are
calculated in seconds! This rapid response allows the engineer to quickly
evaluate alternatives for optimal system performance.

The equivalent electrical circuit can be solved in either Maxwell SPICE or
exported to Analogy's Saber format. Once the circuit has been defined and
solved, the results can be viewed in the signal post processor. EMSS
models may be distributed to other Maxwell SPICE and Saber users without
disclosing proprietary design information. Suppliers and vendors are able
to work closely together without sacrificing design integrity.

Additional EMSS Rollout Activities

Ansoft will host a series of seminars introducing EMSS technology
throughout October and November. There is no fee for the seminars but
pre-registration is required.
