APC enters telecommunications market with PowerShield ISDN Uninterruptible
Power Supply, power protection for ISDN equipment

September 28,1 995 -- American Power Conversion (West Kingston, RI) today
announced the new PowerShield ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network)
Uninterruptible Power Supply, providing battery backup power for ISDN
equipment connected to a customer's ISDN network interface (NT-1).

"APC is leading the way to provide a full range of solutions for the
emerging Information Superhighway," said American Power Conversion
President and CEO, Rodger B. Dowdell, Jr., "The PowerShield ISDN UPS
represents APC's first of a series of products dedicated to the
telecommunications market. These products, from our Digital Media Business
Unit, will provide reliability necessary to make these new technologies
viable for business."

Many people are turning to ISDN to provide a cost effective solution for
high speed telecommunications. The Small Office/Home Office environment
gains the most benefits of ISDN's high speed without the prohibitive cost
of dedicated lines. However, many ISDN users are not aware of ISDN's
problem with power. Unlike normal telephone service, which provides power
directly via the phone line, ISDN requires separate power drawn from the
utility line. This makes ISDN susceptible to power problems such as
blackouts and brownouts. In fact, public utility commissions in some
states disallow 911 services over ISDN because of the problem with power
outages.

"For today's telecommuters and small offices, the PowerShield ISDN UPS
eliminates the risk of losing phone service during a power blackout. It
provides the power necessary to carry you through the interruption of your
utility service and lets your business continue. In this way, you have the
same peace of mind you've always expected from your telephone service,
while taking advantage of the state of the art in high speed data
communications technology," said Bob Thurston, APC's Telecommunications
Product Manager.

"The APC folks have done their homework with this device," says Axel
Leichum, ISDN Customer Premise Equipment (CPE) Product Manager for Siemens
Stromberg-Carlson, a leading manufacturer of ISDN equipment, "This new
product from APC is right on the mark. It perfectly complements our just
introduced line of ISDN CPE products. For example, the polarity reversal
feature of the PowerShield ISDN allows our products to switch into a low
power mode of operation and signal the user via a display message that
battery backup is in effect. With its compact size and just-right
features, this will be the product of choice for both ISDN CPE suppliers
and end-users."

The PowerShield ISDN UPS replaces the AC adapter supplied with an ISDN NT-1
unit and provides, on average, four hours of backup power for your ISDN
service. PowerShield ISDN provides a nominal output of -48VDC of PS/2
power on either the U or S/T interface of the ISDN bus. This will power
the NT-1 and any attached Customer Premises Equipment (CPE), up to a 10W
maximum load. Attaching the optional Extended Battery Pack (XBP) can
triple this run time.

In addition to providing battery back-up power, the PowerShield ISDN
protects costly ISDN equipment from power surges and spikes from the AC
line. PowerShield ISDN reduces the financial risk of damage from voltage
surges on the utility line.

Product benefits include:

BATTERY BACKUP: PowerShield ISDN provides uninterrupted operation for your
ISDN equipment. Run times range 1-5 hours for up to 10 Watts of ISDN
equipment. The load drawn by the ISDN equipment determines the exact run
time.

EXTENDED RUN TIME: Optional Extended Battery Pack triples the available run
time for customers needing extended power protection.

SURGE PROTECTION: Protection from power surges on the utility line guards
your equipment.

ENSURED RELIABILITY: Automatic self-testing of the battery ensures
PowerShield's continued reliability.

POWER CONDITION INDICATORS: Audible and visual indicators allow user to
monitor changes in power conditions.

ENERGY CONSERVATION: PowerShield ISDN provides reverse polarity PS/2 power
during a utility line failure. This triggers the energy conserving sleep'
mode supported by most NT-1's and CPE.

INDUSTRY COMPLIANCE: ANSI T1.601 and T1.605 compliance ensures
compatibility with your ISDN equipment.

The PowerShield ISDN UPS is expected to be priced at $159 and the
PowerShield ISDN XBP is expected to be priced at $99. APC will release
final pricing on these products parallel with the launch on November 1.

PowerShield ISDN is UL listed and FCC class B verified and carries a 2 year
warranty against defects in materials and labor.
