Apple's Interactive Media Capabilities To Be Available For Microware's
DAVID Operating System

Apple Plans to Port Popular Multimedia and Graphics Technologies to
Interactive TV Operating System

SAN JOSE, California--September 27, 1995--Apple Computer, Inc. and
Microware Systems, Corp. announced today that Apple plans to port its
QuickTime multimedia and QuickDraw graphics technologies to Microware's
newest version of its DAVID operating system for interactive television
(ITV). DAVID v2.0 was announced separately today at the DAVID Developer's
Conference. The Apple and Microware technologies are key components for
the next generation of intelligent consumer products for digital networks,
including ITV.

QuickTime, Apple's multimedia software, along with QuickDraw, Apple's
32-bit color graphics software, are critical media-software components for
delivering high-quality interactive applications. Currently, two-thirds of
multimedia content is developed on the Macintosh platform. DAVID (Digital
Audio/Video Interactive Decoder) is the standard operating system
environment for decoders that can be used in telephone, cable TV and
wireless networks. DAVID is licensed by more than 20 companies including
General Instrument Corporation; Philips Consumer Electronics; IBM
Corporation; Divicom, Inc.; Compression Labs, Inc.; Mitsubishi
Corporation; Samsung Electronics; Goldstar Electronics Company and Stellar
One Corporation.

DAVID v2.0 is specifically designed to enable developers to author any
application once, store it on any server, send it across any digital
network and play it on any DAVID-based decoder. Combined, the Apple and
Microware technologies are key components for enabling multimedia content
for ITV.

"The future of standards for interactive television is being determined
now," said Kenneth Van Meter, senior vice president of TeleTV, the ITV
company created by Bell Atlantic, NYNEX and Pacific Telesis. "The marriage
of Apple's multimedia and graphics technologies and Microware's DAVID
Operating System offers a powerful combination for interactive content."

"Apple's decision to begin porting QuickTime and QuickDraw to other
interactive platforms is a key component of the company's strategy to
develop cross-platform technologies in this emerging market," said Rick
Shriner, vice president of interactive media for Apple. "Further, this
decision puts both Apple and Microware in the running for several RFPs
(Request for Proposal) now being initiated by major telecommunications
companies."

"We are excited to be working with Apple to support the port of their
industry-leading graphic tools and run-time systems to DAVID v2.0," said
Steve Johnson, executive vice president and general manager of new media
systems for Microware. "The interactive television industry will benefit
enormously by leveraging off of Apple's installed base of multimedia
developers and the applications available for DAVID set-top decoders."

Apple is working with major service and content providers to license its
hardware and software for use in ITV systems worldwide. Current
deployments include BT (formerly British Telecom); Belgacom, Belgium's
telecommunications provider; and Telia A B, Sweden's largest phone,
cellular and cable provider. DAVID-based decoders from Microware licensees
are deployed in Bell Atlantic's Stargazer Video-On-Demand trial and Hong
Kong Telecom's ADSL trial. DAVID-based decoders have also been selected by
Cox Cable, Telecom Australia, Singapore Telecom, Korea Telecom and New
Brunswick Telecation. The company was founded in 1977 and is headquartered
in Des Moines, Iowa. Microware has offices in San Jose, California; Tokyo,
Japan; Burnham, England; and Aix-en-Provence, France. In addition, the
company has authorized distributors worldwide.
