Apple Enhances Networking Software Packages

Speedier AppleShare Now Native for PowerPC; New Updates for AppleShare
Client for Windows and PowerShare Customers

CUPERTINO, California--October 16, 1995--Apple Computer, Inc. today
announced updates to several of its high-value network services software
packages, including a new version of AppleShare, which now runs "native"
on PowerPC microprocessor-based systems from Apple. The latest version of
Apple's flagship file-and-print solution--AppleShare version 4.2--is the
fastest AppleShare ever. Apple also announced enhanced versions of its
AppleShare Client for Windows and PowerShare Collaboration Server software
packages.

"With these low-cost software upgrades, we've made it easy for Apple's
Workgroup Server customers to increase the value of their hardware
investment," said Andy Felong, senior director for Collaboration and
Communications Technologies. "The latest AppleShare version, for instance,
more than doubles average file transfer speeds while providing the same
ease-of-use as previous AppleShare versions."

AppleShare v.4.2 is designed for PowerPC processor-based systems with NuBus
and provides an average of 110 percent performance improvement over
AppleShare v.4.1 for file transfers between personal computers and an
AppleShare server. Even greater performance is achieved with multi-user
database applications with increased performance nearly 140 percent faster
than AppleShare v.4.1, according to Apple tests.

"I'm very happy with the speed boost I've seen with file transfers using
AppleShare version 4.2, especially with multiple users logged onto the
network," said AppleShare beta customer John Marketon, systems engineer
for Hughes-STX Corp. in Lanham, Maryland. "I was particularly impressed by
how much easier it was to to set-up and use the dynamic caching in
AppleShare v.4.2 compared with previous AppleShare versions."

AppleShare v.4.2 includes a simple-to-manage block cache architecture that
dynamically tunes itself for optimal performance, making the software
easier to configure and tune. The latest upgrade also supports nearly 10
times as many open files as AppleShare v.4.1 and increases the maximum
number of concurrent users from 150 to 250, enhancing the software for
multi-user database environments.

Network software enhancements

Apple also announced enhancements to two other network software packages.
The AppleShare Client for Windows v.1.0.1 has expanded its network support
to include LocalTalk and Token Ring networks. Additionally, the latest
software update provides increased performance and reliability for large
printing tasks. The AppleShare Client for Windows was developed to give
Windows users in mixed Macintosh and Windows networking environments easy
access to AppleShare file and print services.

The latest PowerShare Collaboration Server software (version 1.1) includes
enhanced Internet support, including the ability to import Internet
addresses from a text file into a PowerShare catalog. PowerShare v.1.1
also allows administrators to import more types of data directly into the
PowerShare catalog, along with improved performance in message routing and
more space for log information. The latest update also makes it easier to
support and integrate PowerShare and PowerTalk into SMTP-based
environments.
