Apple's On-line Head Challenges Information Industry to Make Room for
Children in Cyberspace

Peter Friedman Tells Industry Chiefs at Jupiter Panel: "If On-line Turns
into a Virtual Latchkey, We've Failed."

NEW YORK, New York--October 26, 1995--At a gathering of on-line industry
executives yesterday, Peter Friedman, head of Apple Computer, Inc.'s
on-line and Internet division, took up the cause of children on-line and
delivered a strong challenge to his colleagues to make Cyberspace both
appropriate for--and inclusive of--kids, as well as adults.

"If on-line turns into a virtual latchkey, we will have failed in a big
way," Friedman, vice president of Apple's Internet Services division, said
at an Apple-sponsored panel hosted by teen publisher Alex Hempton. "We
have an incredible opportunity to bring children back into the mainstream
of our culture with on-line services and the Internet. But to date, we've
left kids stuck on the onramp to the Information Highway, unable to fully
participate in the digital revolution.

"We need to treat people under 21 not just as a discreet market, but as
equal citizens of Cyberspace, so they can stand up and be counted for
their contributions. This means not only making Cyberspace appropriate for
kids, but also giving them the tools to become on-line publishers and
authors," Friedman said.

Alex Hempton, the 14 year old publisher of Youth Central on Apple's eWorld
on-line service, hosted the panel and asked industry executives questions
that had been submitted by young people who frequent on-line services and
the Internet.

In addition to Friedman, the panel included Dan Daniel, general manager,
Kids & Games, Prodigy; Stephen Lake, senior vice president of development,
Reuters; Geoffrey Darby, president, Viacom Interactive Services and Myer
Berlow, vice president of national accounts, America Online.

eWorld features a number of on-line destinations that are managed by people
under 21. Hempton's Youth Central is a growing community of young people
dedicated to intelligent on-line discussion and information-sharing. Other
teen-published destinations on eWorld include Girls On-line and Youth
Tech, dedicated to creating a community of young women in Cyberspace and
advancing young people's use of high technology, respectively.

An edited transcript of the Q & A session will be posted on eWorld and will
also be available from Cynthia Funnell, Public Relations, Apple Internet
Services.
