Apple and Mentat Demonstrate Next Generation Internet Protocol Prototype
For Mac OS At NetWorld+Interop

NetWorld+Interop, ATLANTA, Georgia--September 27, 1995--Apple Computer,
Inc. and Mentat Inc. today demonstrated a prototype implementation of
Internet Protocol Version 6, or IPv6, the next generation internet
networking protocol, running on Apple Open Transport. Open Transport, the
new standards-based networking and communications system for Mac OS began
shipping earlier this year as a standard feature of Apple's new PCI-based
Power Macintosh systems. Apple and Mentat are working together to ensure
timely availability of IPv6 for the Mac OS once the standard has been
completed.

IPv6 is an update of the current Internet Protocol, IPv4, part of the
TCP/IP suite of protocols used to allow computers to communicate with each
other over the Internet. The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) is in
the process of specifying the standards for IPv6. IPv6 is being designed
to respond to the limitations of IPv4, including an upcoming shortage of
new IP addresses, to allow for the continued expansion of the Internet and
deployment on corporate networks. IPv6 also incorporates new functionality
to provide security, multimedia support, and plug and play capabilities,
features necessary to usher the Internet into the 21st century.

Apple and Mentat recently announced their agreement under which Apple
licensed Mentat Portable Streams (MPS) and Mentat TCP/IP (MTCP) as key
components of Apple Open Transport. Mentat IP Next Generation (MING) is
Mentat's portable implementation of TCP/IP incorporating IPv6, and is the
basis of the prototype shown today.

"We are pleased to be able to join Apple in demonstrating our IPv6 running
on the Mac OS with Open Transport--the first IPv6 prototype shown publicly
on a mainstream personal computer," said Bruce Carneal, President of
Mentat, Inc. "Open Transport's adoption of STREAMS and DLPI standards made
it easy for us to develop the software concurrently for both UNIX and the
Mac OS."

"Today's demonstration shows that we're on track to keep the Mac OS at the
leading edge with Internet technology." said Ike Nassi, Vice President of
System Software Technology at Apple Computer, Inc. "Apple's commitment to
our customers on the Internet continues to grow and with Apple Open
Transport v1.1, we intend to expand beyond PCI-bus Power Macintosh systems
to deliver a workstation class TCP/IP to the Mac OS installed base."

"This announcement shows the benefits of using standards--including XTI and
STREAMS--for Mac OS networking", said Andy Felong, Senior Director of
Communications & Collaboration at Apple Computer, Inc. "Having a
standards-based environment significantly reduces the time required to
bring leading edge networking technology, such as IPv6, to the Mac OS, and
allows Apple to better serve the needs of our customers"

Open Transport Version 1.1 is expected to ship to customers by the end of
1995. Apple plans to incorporate support for IPv6, based on MING, in a
future release of Open Transport.

Mentat is the industry's leading supplier of high performance, kernel-level
network software. Based in Los Angeles, California, Mentat was founded in
1987 and remains privately held. In addition to STREAMS and TCP/IP, Mentat
also provides STREAMS-based XTP and XNS protocol stacks. By emphasizing
both portability and efficiency, Mentat delivers highly reliable and
maintainable software with unlimited performance. Mentat has licensed its
