Apple Expands its Commanding Lead in Education Market

Macintosh Installed Base Gains 10 Share Points in Past Year

CUPERTINO, California--October 2, 1995--Fueled by strong sales of Apple
Macintosh computers to education, Apple Computer, Inc. took a commanding
lead in the kindergarten through high school market. According to new
research from Quality Education Data's (QED) "1995-96 Technology
Purchasing Forecast" report, 63 percent of the computers used in U.S.
public schools are Apple-branded. Apple's share of school PCs grew four
full share points, up from 59 percent.

The QED report also predicts that Apple will continue to be the leader by a
wide margin in the education market. In addition to the strong installed
base, school districts report that 58 percent of the units they plan to
purchase during the 1995-96 school year are Macintosh. This is more than
three times the planned purchases for the second-leading brand, IBM, with
an 18 percent share of planned purchases. Non-named brands make up the
third-largest segment of planned purchases, at 12 percent. Planned
purchases for other name-brand systems were lower, including Compaq at
seven percent, and Dell at four percent.

QED President Jeanne Hayes says, "This is great news for Apple. Interest in
the Macintosh is extremely high. Our research clearly indicates that the
majority of districts are planning the future of their schools around the
Macintosh platform. The average district plans to buy 28 Macintosh
computers, eight IBMs, and 10 other IBM-compatibles during the 1995-96
school year."

"Based on this research, the installed base and planned-purchase results
show that Macintosh is increasing its position as the system of choice for
schools," says Dr. Terry Crane, Apple USA's vice president of K-12 sales.
"More than 17 years ago Apple made an investment in education that
continues to this day. After nearly two decades as the leading provider of
computers to education, we continue to offer the education market the best
price and performance value, and the programs and curriculum solutions to
support the use of technology in learning."

Educators are embracing the power of Power PC over Pentium. Plans to
purchase by platform also show that districts are more interested in
PowerPC than Pentium. Districts reported that 23 percent of the units they
will purchase will be Power Macintosh versus only eight percent
Pentium-based systems. This makes the Power Macintosh the favorite three
to one over Pentium.

The strong interest in PowerPC is a reflection of the growing importance of
multimedia technology as a teaching and learning tool. Today, 77 percent
of all districts currently using multimedia computer systems use
Macintosh, according to the latest QED Educational Technology Trends
report.

"Schools are investing in the platform of the future that integrates all of
the 21st century education technologies--multimedia, collaboration,
simulation, virtual reality, and internet access," says Crane. "With only
a small fraction of purchases planned on the Pentium platform, more of the
leading edge education solutions will continue to be developed for the
growing installed base of high performance Macintosh computers."

In addition to being the leading provider of computers to education, Apple
offers schools other products and services including technology planning,
curriculum solutions and staff development. Since the 1991 introduction of
the Macintosh LC series of computers designed for education, Apple also
has been providing multimedia-capable systems to education. These systems
