SMALL AND MEDIUM SIZED FIRMS LEAD THE CLIENT SERVER REVOLUTION

Computer Intelligence InfoCorp Shows Four Industries Leading U.S.
Client/Server Adoption Curve

LA JOLLA, Calif., Oct. 10, 1995 - Recent research from Computer
Intelligence InfoCorp (CII) reveals that small and medium size companies
account for 51 percent of the Top 500 most active client/server sites in
the U.S.

The findings emerged from an examination of 131,000 sites from CII's
Installation Database with respect to technology attributes of
client/server early adopters. The Installation Database contains sales and
marketing information on a variety of computer and communications
hardware, software and services installed and planned at more than 250,000
business sites in the U.S., Canada and Europe.

In addition to determining the sites most actively deploying client/server
technology, CII's analysis suggests that four market segments -
manufacturing, services, financial/insurance/real estate and government -
account for 77 percent of the Top 500 client/server sites.

"The swift move to client/server technology by the manufacturing, services
and financial/insurance/real estate market segments is likely due to the
worldwide competitive pressures of those commercial markets, " said Jerry
Berry, a CII Senior Analyst. "For the federal government, change has been
mandated. Many federal agencies must update heritage technology and make
the move to client/server."

The CII study found that the Top 500 client/server sites share many common
characteristics, including a substantial investment in installed computer
hardware. Nearly 87 percent of early adopters are multi- unit enterprises,
and half of the Top 500 are remote sites. While the data indicate that 53
percent of the Top 500 sites have more than 500 employees, the early
adopters are not necessarily the very largest corporations. Two-thirds of
early adopter sites are not part of the Forbes 500 or Fortune 1000
rankings, and 51 percent of the Top 500 sites are not affiliated with
large corporations, government agencies or universities, indicating that
they are small- or medium- sized firms.

KEY CHARACTERISTICS OF CLIENT/SERVER TOP 500 SITES

 Site Characteristic Percentage of Sites

 Multi-unit enterprise (2+ sites) 87%
 $1M+ Installed Hardware Value 62%
 500+ Employees 57%
 Headquarters Site 50%
 Fortune/Forbes Ranked Site 34%

In addition, the Top 500 early adopter sites share similar technology
profiles. Large numbers of PCs are present, with 83 percent of the Top 500
having 100 or more PCs on site. Though it may not be used for
client/server activity, the UNIX operating system is present at 80 percent
of the Top 500 sites. With the move toward client/server comes an upsurge
in the number of LANs in place and a steady decline in the number of
mainframes.

HARDWARE TECHNOLOGY PENETRATION AT CLIENT/SERVER TOP 500 SITES

 Hardware Technology Percentage of Sites

 100+ PCs 83%
 1+ UNIX Systems 80%
 5+ LANs 48%
 1+ Mainframes 37%

"The migration of mission critical business applications from mainframes to
client/server is a definite reality," said Berry. "While the growth of the
server market is bad news for the mainframe vendors, it has clear benefits
for early adopters. With client/server systems, early adopters gain
control of their corporate data and end users are empowered to make better
business decisions."
