Extended Systems Announces Open Management Architecture @ PC EXPO

New print servers can be managed with platforms from HP, IBM, Novell, Sun
and Banyan

Boise, ID (October 3, 1995) -- Extended Systems announced today at PC EXPO
extensive SNMP support, new ExtendView management utilities and a
redesigned hardware platform. These new features make it easier to
integrate the company's line of ExtendNet print servers into a customer's
overall network management strategy.

ExtendNet print servers are multi-protocol units (external and internal)
that allow users to simultaneously print from Novell NetWare, TCP/IP,
EtherTalk, Windows NT, LAN Manager, LAN Server, and Banyan VINES.
Available in one, two and four port models, prices range from $369 --
$1195 (U.S. list price), depending on the number of printer ports and
protocols supported. Contact Extended Systems at (800) 235-7576.

"Because IT departments are forced to do more with less, print servers must
be able to leverage a customer's investment in industry- standard
management applications. Our SNMP support and new ExtendView utilities
give customers the freedom to manage our print servers from their choice
of management platforms. Our ExtendNet print servers can even be managed
with HP's popular OpenView for Windows and JetAdmin utilities," commented
Steve Simpson, VP of Marketing at Extended Systems.

New Features...

Open Management Architecture

Open management architecture is the ability to manage Extended Systems
print servers from a customer's choice of management platforms. Through
improved SNMP support (private MIB and enhanced printer traps), customers
can easily manage ExtendNet print servers with HP OpenView, Novell NEST,
IBM NetView, Banyan Outlook, Sun Microsystem's SunNet Manager or any other
PC-based SNMP application.

Compatibility with HP's JetAdmin

ExtendNet print servers are also compatible with HP's JetAdmin management
tool. HP JetAdmin software is included with Microsoft's Windows 95 and can
be used to monitor ExtendNet print servers.

Intuitive, PC-Based TCP/IP Utility

ExtendView for TCP/IP is an easy-to-use, powerful utility that allows users
to install, configure and manage Extended Systems print servers. In
addition to easy TCP/IP address assignment, ALL network protocol settings
can be conveniently configured from TCP/IP. ExtendView also includes a
"snap-in executable" for HP OpenView for Windows. Extended Systems ships
similar configuration and management utilities for NetWare and Banyan
VINES.

"Smart" Print Servers that Manage Themselves

The ExtendView utility gives administrators the ability to "poll" the print
servers and display any errors that occur. The print servers can also be
configured to notify the system administrator of any problems. Advanced
filtering, sorting and diagnostic capabilities also allow administrators
to quickly monitor any printer on the network from one location.
"Selected" data is automatically "refreshed" as often as the administrator
prefers.

SNMP over IPX

In addition to SNMP over IP, supporting SNMP over IPX gives administrators
another way to configure and manage their print servers. Administrators
can also control which SNMP traps are sent over each protocol.

DHCP Compatibility

One of the biggest hassles of TCP/IP networks is manually assigning IP
addresses. Compatibility with the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol
standard (DHCP) means ExtendNet print servers will automatically receive
an IP address.

New Hardware Platform

To save valuable space, ExtendNet SX and DX print servers have been
redesigned (almost 50% smaller). Because of their new design and light
weight, ExtendNet print servers can be attached to the side of a printer
or under a desktop.

Investment Protection

Extended Systems promises 100% customer satisfaction. Each print server
also comes with unlimited toll-free technical support, a 5- year warranty
and 30-day money-back guarantee. Customers can conveniently upgrade their
ExtendNet print servers by downloading new firmware (free of charge) to
their print server's Flash memory. As a customer's printing needs change,
they can exchange their current ESI print server (or a competitive print
server) and receive a 50% discount off the U.S. list price of a new
ExtendNet print server.
