FORBES TO MAKE ONLINE DEBUT WITH THE FORBES 400 ISSUE

NEW YORK, October 2-FORBES magazine announced today that its October 16th
special issue ranking The 400 Richest People In America-on newsstands this
week-will be available online later this month to members of the
CompuServe Information Service.

The appearance of the FORBES 400 on CompuServe will mark the debut of
FORBES Online, a new service that will bring the cutting-edge business
reporting of FORBES directly to the personal computers of millions of
CompuServe members.

Like the printed magazine, FORBES Online will provide a wealth of
information and sophisticated analysis of companies-and the people who run
them-as well as articles on industries, finance, international business,
marketing, law, taxes, science and technology, computers and
communications, investments, and starting your own business. Stories will
be available with full text and selected photos.

Stories from the magazine's two popular supplements, the lifestyle
quarterly FORBES FYI and the technology supplement FORBES ASAP, are
expected on the service by the end of October.

"By providing instant access to past and present issues of FORBES magazine,
FORBES Online will be a powerful informational resource," said Timothy C.
Forbes, Acting Chief Executive Officer of Forbes Inc.

The electronic environment, he noted, will dramatically expand
opportunities to use the boundless information the magazine provides. For
example, CompuServe members will eventually be able to retrieve instantly
all of the magazine's noted rankings, past and present. They include, in
addition to the FORBES 400, the magazine's rankings of mutual funds,
top-earning athletes and entertainers, as well as FORBES 500 rankings of
corporate sales, assets, market capitalization and profits. Rankings will
be added to the service as they appear in the magazine.

FORBES Online's streamlined format will facilitate quick access to
information. The online area's flexible design will enable new features to
be added to the service.

FORBES Online will include the following sections:

LISTS: This section will contain FORBES' noted rankings, which may be
searched by using a variety of criteria. The electronic edition of the
FORBES 400 list of The Richest People In America, for example, can be
searched by name, location and net worth. These online lists will be
updated frequently.

READER SERVICES: Members can access this section to order subscriptions and
submit letters to the editor by mail.

FORBES FORUM: The forum will enable members to discuss a wide variety of
business and finance issues with each other and FORBES editors. Message
sections will correspond to departments within the magazine, such as
Mutual Funds, Companies, Industries and People. Members will be able to
correspond by E-mail with selected business leaders whose responses will
be posted online. Forum libraries will contain information from the
magazine in new formats-such as FORBES lists in spreadsheet form- along
with past FORBES covers and other offerings.

Also included in this section will be the "Press Room," designed for
working journalists. Accessible by password, it will offer additional ways
to search the FORBES rankings, as well as FORBES press releases and other
information of special interest to reporters.

GREATEST HITS: This area will feature FORBES stories from the past few
years that have evoked the greatest reader response.
