HP UNVEILS POWERFUL NEW OMNIBOOK 5000 NOTEBOOK PC

120MHz Pentium-based Notebook PC, New Docking Solution Extends HP OmniBook
Family

PALO ALTO, Calif., Oct. 23, 1995 -- Hewlett-Packard Company today announced
the HP OmniBook 5000 CTS 5/120 notebook PC, based on Intel's new 120MHz
Pentium processor. In conjunction, HP announced a full-featured docking
system for its entire line of HP OmniBook 5000 notebook PCs, which include
a full range of 75MHz, 90MHz and 120MHz Pentium-based models.

The HP OmniBook 5000 CTS 5/120 is designed to provide true desktop
performance in a notebook package. In addition to the power of the 120MHz
Pentium processor, the HP OmniBook 5000 CTS 5/120 offers a 1.2GB hard
drive standard, 256K L2 cache and up to 64MB RAM. Also, as with the entire
line of OmniBook 5000 notebook PCs, the HP OmniBook 5000 CTS 5/120 is
based on the PCI bus, which enables accelerated graphics and input/output
performance.

HP Docking System for the OmniBook 5000 Series

To complement the desktop performance of the OmniBook 5000 series, HP is
offering one of the industry's first notebook docking systems to support
PCI. The docking system for the OmniBook 5000 includes two full-length ISA
slots and one PCI slot. This enables even faster desktop performance for
the OmniBook 5000 with high-speed networking and accelerated
video-graphics capabilities. Users also can connect their HP OmniBook 5000
PC to other peripherals, external speakers and audio devices with the
docking system.

The docking system supports hot docking with Windows 95 and is
multimedia-ready with stereo in/out ports and a MIDI/joystick port.

Additional ports are available on the docking system, including parallel,
serial, SVGA-out, keyboard, PS/2 mouse, audio and SCSI-2.

In addition to the docking system, accessories for the HP OmniBook 5000 PC
include RAM expansion cards, a lithium-ion battery, disk drives, power
adapters and an external battery charger.

Value Line

Newly incorporated into the HP OmniBook 5000 series is the VL or Value
Line. The Value Line offers high-performance notebooks at more mainstream
prices.

The VL models include 75MHz and 90MHz Pentium processors with the features
of the HP OmniBook 5000 line, except L2 cache and SCSI. A nickel metal
hydride battery is substituted for lithium ion and a one-year warranty
replaces the three-year warranty.

"By offering a streamlined OmniBook," said Wayne Westly, product manager at
HP's Mobile Computing Division. "HP can broaden its customer base to
include users who don't necessarily need a full set of features but still
want the high performance and quality associated with OmniBook PCs."

HP OmniBook 5000 Series

HP recently dropped prices on the OmniBook 5000 series by as much as 8
percent. With the OmniBook 5000, HP aims to incorporate Pentium/PCI
performance at a competitive price. Current prices range from $3,350 to
$6,630, depending on processor and other features.

All HP OmniBook 5000 PCs and the docking systems for the HP OmniBook 5000
PC are expected to ship in early December.

HP's premium OmniBook 5000 notebook PCs incorporate an array of advanced
features, such as the following:

HP's unique instant-on feature, which gives users immediate access to
applications without rebooting the system;

10.4-inch brilliant displays with either VGA or SVGA (800 x 600)
resolution;

up to 1.2GB of hard-disk-drive capacity;

8MB or 16MB RAM expandable to 64MB;

16-bit SoundBlaster-compatible stereo sound;

lithium-ion battery for lighter weight and longer life (nickel metal
hydride on VL line);

Microsoft(R) Windows 95 preloaded, featuring support of Plug-and-Play, hot
docking and IrDA infrared wireless data transfer; the ability to swap an
optional second battery for the built-in floppy drive, doubling battery
life;

built-in SCSI-2 port to connect to SCSI devices such as CD-ROM players and
tape drives (not in VL line);

NTSC/PAL video-out, which allows use of a TV set as an external monitor or
connection to a VCR;

MIDI port for keyboards and synthesizers and joystick port for
entertainment software;

two Type II PCMCIA slots (or one Type III slot); and

NSP (Native Signal Processing) capability, including support of the DCI
(Display Control Interface).
