New Certification Program Recognizes Client/Server Success Requires
Technical Skill and Business Understanding

WHITE PLAINS, NY -- September 29, 1995. . .IBM today announced a
Client/Server Integration Specialist certification program. The program,
available to customers, business partners and IBM employees in North
America, is designed to help address skills issues in the industry and
recognizes the role of the technology professional as a key player in
delivering value to the business.

"The client/server market is growing at a phenomenal rate. If companies are
to benefit in business terms from this technology model, it is crucial
that the industry has the skills to keep up with its expansion," said
Martin C. Clague, general manager of IBM Worldwide Client/Server
Computing.

A market study conducted by IBM last year highlighted skills as a key
barrier to achieving client/server success alongside other 'people' issues
like the cost of developing new systems, poor coordination between
different departments and lack of preparation or training for end users.

The role of the Certified Client/Server Integration Specialist will be to
understand the technical complexities of multivendor client/server
implementation and the need to deliver usefulness to the business
process.

"This certification program demonstrates a clear understanding of what is
going on in the real world," said Frank Dzubeck, President of
Communications Network Architects, Inc. "The key impediment in the growth
of enterprise-wide client/server implementations in the '90s is not
hardware, software or even inconsistent reengineering models...it simply
is the lack of a sufficient number of individuals who are properly trained
in multi-vendor client/server disciplines. IBM's certification program is
unique for a vendor in that it targets the development of heterogeneous
multi-vendor client/server skills rather than product sales pitches."

"As an industry, we cannot underestimate the importance of delivering
technology solutions that are well-designed and architected to serve
business," said Judith Hurwitz, President of Hurwitz Consulting Group,
Inc. "This program recognizes that the most successful client/server
implementations are managed by well-qualified individuals who understand
the business they are serving with technology answers."

To certify, an IBM Client/Server Integration Specialist must have knowledge
of the range of elements found in a client/server project. The
Specialist's understanding must encompass everything from client/server
technology and business drivers, client/server feasibility assessment, and
systems and network management; to application development tools
classification, client/server middleware, and open standards and
blueprints.

"The skill and knowledge requirements that we chose to include in this
certification program reflect research gathered from our own extensive
experience in client/server implementation, from our customers and from
industry experts," said Peter Tarrant, vice president of Client/Server
Marketing, IBM.

Two tests will be required for certification. It is not necessary for a
certification applicant to attend a course to pass the test. Testing is
provided by Drake Prometric, a recognized leader in certification
testing.
