IBM Token-Ring Adapter Enhancements

09/12/95

New Low Price for Auto LANStreamer PCI Adapter
Memory Reductions for DOS/Windows Client Adapters
New Triple LANStreamer - 3 Port PCI Adapter

Today, IBM announces key enhancements to its industry leading Token- Ring
adapter family; a list price reduction from $575 to $435 on our Auto
LANStreamer PCI Adapter, reduced conventional/upper memory consumption
with our new LAN Client code, and a new 3-port PCI server adapter. These
announcements strengthen IBM's leadership in providing advanced PCI
adapter solutions for both client and server applications.

The high performance and low CPU utilization advantage of IBM's LANStreamer
technology is well known for server and OS/2 client environments. Now,
with IBM's LAN Client code, even memory constrained DOS/Windows client
workstations can realize these benefits. IBM's LAN Client code, and
today's price reduction on our Auto LANStreamer PCI adapter, now makes
this one adapter ideal for all your client and server needs.

IBM LAN Client will be available in two releases; Beta will be available
September 29, and will include support for Novell, NetBIOS, 802.2 and
TCP/IP protocols. Release 1 will be available by October 31, and will
include support for Novell (pre-release), NetBIOS, 802.2 and TCP/IP
(pre-release) protocols. Release 2 will be available in December.

With IBM LAN Client, device drivers in a Novell client environment also
running 802.2, shrinks from over 100KB of conventional memory to a tiny
4KB. In an OS/2 LAN Server Client with 802.2, what used to require over
100kB of DOS memory, shrinks to 24 kB in release 1 and all the way to 2 KB
in release 2.

In addition to the Auto LANStreamer PCI adapter, IBM LAN Client also
supports our ISA and Micro Channel client adapters as well. These adapters
will also require 24 kB of upper memory, but will still have the same 2 to
24 kB footprint in conventional memory. Release 2 of IBM LAN Client will
reduce the conventional memory footprint down to 2 to 4 KB, and will add
support for our PCMCIA (PC Card) adapters.

IBM LAN Client will be available September 29th electronically as LANCLNT
on the IBM bulletin board at 919-517-0001 or on our Internet FTP site,
FTP.PCCO.IBM.COM.

The new Triple LANStreamer PCI Adapter is the industry's first 3- port
PCI-bus Token Ring adapter, and is designed to meet the needs of high
bandwidth servers. Since many PCI servers have a limited number of PCI
slots, the 3-port PCI adapter triples the amount of available bandwidth
without the need for additional slots. Each port is capable of media speed
(16 Mbits/sec) throughput, and is also enabled for full-duplex operation
at an effective rate of 32 Mbits/sec when used with a full-duplex switch
such as the IBM 8272 LANStreamer Token Ring Switch. The Triple LANStreamer
PCI Adapter will be available October 27, 1995, and has a list price of
$1,395 (single) or $1,353/adapter (5 or 30 packs).

With these new announcements, IBM is on the leading edge in providing
advanced PCI Token Ring adapters for both client and server applications.
We are also protecting our customers' investments in ISA and Micro Channel
by continuing to enhance our adapters for these environments.
