Intergraph's Solid Edge Software Leads CAD Revolution

HUNTSVILLE, ALA., OCT. 17, 1995 -- Intergraph Corporation today introduced
SOLID EDGE -- the company's next-generation computer-aided design (CAD)
software for mechanical assembly and part modeling. Offering mechanical
engineering and design professionals the leading-edge alternative to
traditional CAD tools, SOLID EDGE brings the performance of expensive,
proprietary CAD systems to an open, easy-to-use, and cost-effective
software architecture. Priced at $5,995 (U.S.), SOLID EDGE will be
available for customer shipment by the end of 1995.

CAD WITHOUT COMPROMISE

"SOLID EDGE offers mechanical design professionals an uncompromising 3D CAD
solution and is the result of Intergraph's advanced-capability Jupiter
technology," said Tommy Steele, president of Intergraph Software
Solutions.

Traditionally, mechanical designers had to choose between best-in- class
solutions and tight integration, between ease of use and power, and
between high and low costs. With support of industry standards, a powerful
and intuitive WindowsR interface, and a competitive price, SOLID EDGE
eliminates these tradeoffs while providing the industry's first system
focused on assembly design.

"SOLID EDGE delivers proof of concept of Jupiter technology and is a
significant milestone in the new direction of Intergraph Software
Solutions," added Steele.

"Intergraph's vision for SOLID EDGE represents an exciting new concept in
mechanical design automation based on the open, environmental
interoperability being driven by Microsoft and Intergraph," commented
Bruce Jenkins, vice president of Daratech. "SOLID EDGE deserves the
consideration of every serious CAD buyer."

THE SOLID EDGE ADVANTAGE

SOLID EDGE stands apart from other CAD products by offering remarkable ease
of use, a unique focus on assembly design, and plug-and-play
interoperability. Developed specifically for WindowsR 95 and Windows NT
operating systems, SOLID EDGE is the first Windows- based mechanical CAD
system to implement innovative assembly design functions and revolutionary
software integration technologies. These technological advances help
shorten time to market and improve design productivity.

"SOLID EDGE takes full advantage of leading-edge features that make Windows
the operating system of choice for high-performance technical
applications," said Brooke Banbury Masland, senior marketing manager at
Microsoft. "Intergraph was instrumental in developing OLE extensions for
Design and Modeling Applications (OLE for D&M), now an integral component
of Windows."

SOLID EDGE also taps the full power of Spatial Technology's ACIS solid
modeling kernel for advanced performance 3D mechanical design. The ACIS
solid modeler provides speed, reliability, and a robust mechanism for
exchanging data between other ACIS-based applications.

EXCEPTIONAL EASE OF USE

Mechanical designers will find solid modeling easier with SOLID EDGE's
built-in intelligent design tools and intuitive commands. Training tools,
including tutorials, examples, and on-line help, make learning SOLID EDGE
almost effortless and eliminate the need for classroom training.

"SOLID EDGE enables engineers to focus more energy on product design and
less on operating their CAD system. One of the outstanding benefits of
this new technology is that one hundred million Windows users already know
sixty-percent of SOLID EDGE commands," said William H. McClure, vice
president, Intergraph Mechanical Software Solutions. "This means SOLID
EDGE offers a clear advantage in decreasing training costs, reducing
design cycles and improving product quality."

UNIQUE ASSEMBLY DESIGN FOCUS

Because mechanical engineers spend their time designing assemblies, not
just component parts, SOLID EDGE offers productivity aids for
assembly-specific design tasks. These specialized tools address part-
to-part relationships and assembly structure while accommodating teams of
engineering professionals collaborating on assembly design projects.

"Engineering organizations need assembly tools that revolutionize the way
designers carry out their daily work," said McClure. "SOLID EDGE reflects
how product designers and mechanical engineers innately approach the
design process. It understands the practical and natural design
engineering workflow, a refreshing change from the single-part oriented
CAD systems of today."

UNPARALLELED PLUG-AND-PLAY INTEROPERABILITY

SOLID EDGE introduces innovative plug-and-play software technology that
changes the paradigm for integrating CAD with other computer- aided tools.
With the industry's first implementation of Windows OLE for D&M, SOLID
EDGE breaks the barriers between CAD and other software. Simple
cut-and-paste operations provide seamless sharing of 3D design data among
technical, business, and office productivity applications. And, with the
recently announced 3D Clipboard format for Windows based on Spatial's ACIS
SAT file format, SOLID EDGE provides the industry's most open 3D design
and modeling environment.

"SOLID EDGE removes proprietary barriers that have isolated CAD from the
mainstream of organizations," said McClure. "SOLID EDGE's interoperability
dramatically reduces the cost of ownership of CAD technology, merging
engineering applications and office tools in a single software
environment."
