Legato Announces the Industry's First Enterprise Storage Management
Solution for Microsoft Windows NT

INCLUDES MICROSOFT BACKOFFICE INTEGRATION

PALO ALTO, CA, October 23, 1995-- Legato Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: LGTO), a
leading provider of client/server-based enterprise storage management
software, today announced NetWorker for the Microsoft Windows NT server
network operating system, the first native Windows NT server-based
enterprise storage management application designed specifically for
protecting mission-critical data and applications on Windows NT workgroups
or mixed platform enterprises. NetWorker for Windows NT sets a new
standard for protecting data for Windows NT-based data by offering the
following capabilities: comprehensive data protection for multi-platform
environments, widest platform support in the industry, consistent
network-wide administration, high performance, mainframe-class media
management, and unique modularity. In addition, NetWorker for Windows NT
will offer the best "out of the box" integration with Microsoft BackOffice
family.

NetWorker for Windows NT, Version 4.2, is a native Windows NT-based
application that runs as a Windows NT-based service, and allows customers
to set up a local workgroup backup server or a centralized storage
management server for mixed platform installations including the MS-DOS
operating system, the Windows operating system, Windows NT, Windows for
Workgroups, OS/2, UNIX, Macintosh and NetWare systems.

Michael Peterson, president of Strategic Research Corporation, Santa
Barbara, CA, said, "There is a pent-up demand for an enterprise-class
product that operates on Windows NT. I'm hearing from administrators that
larger sites are not buying-into the point-solution backup strategy. They
are waiting for a suitable product to come to market. Legato's NetWorker
for Windows NT is the first product that uses NT as the host backup server
in an enterprise solution."

"This is an important announcement for corporate customers," said Mike
Nash, group product manager, business systems division, at Microsoft.
"NetWorker for Windows NT provides a powerful Windows NT-based network
storage management solution which unifies and consolidates storage
management across workgroups, departments, and multi-platform systems,"
concluded Nash.

"With Windows NT and Microsoft BackOffice, Microsoft has redefined the
server's role within an enterprise by providing a flexible platform for
business applications. Windows NT enhances the server's role beyond file
and print services and, therefore, dramatically increases the importance
of the data resident on Windows NT-based application servers and attached
desktops," said Louis C. Cole, president and CEO of Legato Systems.
"Protecting this mission-critical data is not well served by today's
backup utilities. Network managers need a more reliable, scalable and high
performance network storage management solution that they can trust and
grow with. NetWorker for Windows NT will be the software they will trust,"
Cole concluded.

NetWorker Product Family for Windows NT

NetWorker for Windows NT will be offered in two configurations: Server
Edition and Network Edition. The Server Edition is ideal for homogeneous
Windows NT workgroups where reliable, standalone backup is desired,
including protection of Microsoft BackOffice applications. The Network
Edition is ideal for mixed platform environments where the Windows NT
application server is configured as a storage management server. NetWorker
for Windows NT, Network Edition can reliably protect data across more
platforms than any other solution in the market today at a performance
standard not possible with backup utilities currently available for the
Windows NT platform. Network Edition also includes client software for
protection of Windows NT, as well as MS-DOS, Windows and Windows for
Workgroups. Support for Microsoft Windows '95 will be available the first
quarter of 1996.

Legato also announced today an entry-level version of the product that
offers a feature-rich alternative to the backup utility which ships as
part of Windows NT Server. Legato Data Backup Utility (LDBU) for Windows
NT offers additional backup features and performance, and provides a
migration path to Legato's award-winning NetWorker product line. Legato
Data Backup Utility will be made available to customers through
participating business partners and selected computer or storage hardware
vendors. Customers can also request LDBU directly through Legato's World
Wide Web site for a nominal handling and shipping fee.

In December, 1994, Legato announced the availability of its ClientPakTM for
Windows NT that provides protection for data resident on Windows NT
Workstation and servers networked to any NetWorker storage management
server. The native Windows NT storage management server product offers
Legato customers an additional option for Windows NT environments.

NetWorker Features for Windows NT

BACKOFFICE INTEGRATION:

NetWorker for Windows NT provides the best "out of the box" support for the
following Microsoft BackOffice applications: Microsoft SQL ServerTM
client- server database manager system (off-line backup), Microsoft
Exchange Server and Microsoft Mail Server (including event notification
via MAPI), Systems Management Server (NetWorker event notification
integrated with Systems Management Server), and Microsoft SNA Server
(transparent access to mainframe storage). To be made available in the
first quarter of 1996, enhancement modules will provide on-line SQL
Server, System Management Server, and LAN-to- mainframe storage via SNA
Server, and NetWorker client software distribution via Systems Management
Server.

COMPREHENSIVE DATA PROTECTION:

NetWorker for Windows NT provides comprehensive data protection for Windows
NT-based systems, including all file systems, Macintosh name spaces,
registry, and event logs. Unlike current backup offerings, NetWorker also
provides complete data protection for multi-platform environments,
including NetWare (Bindery, NDS and name spaces), OS/2 (including extended
attributes and ACLs), and UNIX (including hidden system files and ACLs).

WIDEST PLATFORM SUPPORT IN THE INDUSTRY:

Since NetWorker for Windows NT is based upon fourth-generation code, it can
support 47 unique platforms, including NetWare 3, NetWare 4, AIX, Solaris,
SunOS, SCO UNIX, MS-DOS, Windows, Windows for Workgroups, Windows NT,
OS/2, Digital OSF/1, HP-UX, IRIX, and VINES to name just a few.

STRONG ENDORSEMENT FROM WINDOWS NT AND RISC VENDORS:

NetWorker for Windows NT was designed for easy porting to various CPU
architectures. Several of Legato's NetWorker OEMs will port NetWorker for
Windows NT to the MIPS and Alpha platforms. Each of these OEMs will
develop, sell and support NetWorker-based solutions directly to the market
for Windows NT.

CONSISTENT NETWORK-WIDE ADMINISTRATION:

A Windows NT Workstation can be configured as a central storage management
console, providing a single point of administration for all storage
management processes for the entire enterprise. Global policies and
schedules can be configured from a central point, including the ability to
receive daily reports from all storage management servers. Unlike other
Windows NT backup utilities that support only platform-specific tape
format, NetWorker creates a set of interchangeable tape libraries based
upon Legato's OpenTapeTM format, allowing administrators to exchange
backup and archive tapes across multiple platforms such as NetWare, UNIX,
Windows NT, VINES and others.

HIGH PERFORMANCE:

Unlike other backup offerings that are based upon a dumb-client/smart-
server design, NetWorker is designed as a shared intelligence
architecture. As a result of intelligent software being resident on both
clients and servers, NetWorker is the only Windows NT backup product that
can provide both backup and recovery parallelism (data multiplexing),
client-side compression, password protection and encryption services.

Current Windows NT backup solutions only offer hardware parallelism at a
significantly higher cost. With intelligent server software, multiple data
streams can be driven to multiple and dissimilar storage hardware devices
at the same time, greatly reducing the time necessary to perform nightly
backups.

As a result of Legato's intelligent client software, users of Windows NT
Workstation and other desktop operating systems can perform file
recoveries, on-demand backups and archival services without administrator
intervention. Scheduled backups can be performed faster because multiple
CPUs are "pushing" the data across the network to the storage server and
eventually the storage hardware device(s).

MAINFRAME-CLASS MEDIA MANAGEMENT:

NetWorker's SmartMedia, a suite of powerful media management routines,
provides many mainframe-class media management capabilities not previously
available from Windows NT backup utilities.

Legato's SmartMedia automates the backup process by providing fully
automated media management not offered by other solutions, such as media
pools for rapid recovery; bar code support for rapid media tracking;
automated drive cleaning, auto-verification for reliability and data
integrity; and support for cartridge access ports for easy maintenance,
automated loading, unloading and tape spanning for ease of use. Another
key advantage is NetWorker's automated resource scheduling and dynamic
load balancing for full device utilization in multi-device and multiple
autoloader configurations.

NetWorker's media- and robotics-independent architecture provides uniform
support for a wide variety of tape and autochanger technologies including
QIC, 4mm DAT, 8mm, and DLT tape devices and libraries. NetWorker for
Windows NT is the only storage management application that exploits the
full capabilities of today's state-of-the-art high capacity autoloaders
for performance and fully automated operation.

UNIQUE MODULARITY:

Unlike competitive offerings that require re-installation of software and
shutdown of the server when new features or options are desired, NetWorker
for Windows NT deploys "electronic keys" that unlock features and options
by just typing in numerical enabler codes. This unique feature of
NetWorker greatly simplifies the expansion of storage management, saving
the administrator time, money and accessibility of critical network
services.
