LOTUS PREVIEWS LOTUS NOTES RELEASE 4.0 MANAGEMENT ENHANCEMENTS SCALEABILITY
TESTS REVEAL PERFORMANCE GAINS OF NEARLY 1000%

ATLANTA, Sept. 26, 1995 -- Lotus Development Corp. today previewed here at
Networld+Interop performance improvements and centralized administration
tools that will allow organizations to better manage their enterprise
messaging and groupware environments as well as reduce their overall cost
of ownership.

"As integrated messaging and groupware have become the foundation for
mission-critical applications that are deployed across an enterprise,
requirements for scaleability, manageability, and reliability become
paramount," said Mike Zisman, vice president of Lotus' Communications
Business Group. "Six years of in-market experience and feedback from our
IT customers has helped us focus on improvements in performance, network
bandwidth management, and administration. The combination of more users
per server, less network bandwidth consumption per user, and the need for
fewer administrators per organization will reduce the cost of ownership
for our customers."

"By providing greater scaleability and manageability of the Notes
environment, Notes Release 4.0 directly addresses the key issue of cost of
ownership," confirmed David Marshak, vice president and senior consultant,
Patricia Seybold Group. "It will provide even more compelling support for
the use of Notes in enterprise-wide and inter-enterprise applications."

SCALEABILITY AND PERFORMANCE GAINS INCREASE EXPONENTIALLY

Initial Notes Release 4.0 testing across several multiprocessor platforms
has yielded nearly 1000% performance gains, supporting up to 1000 active,
concurrent users per server compared to approximately 100- 200 users per
server on Notes Release 3.x platforms. Notes Release 4.0 uses a true
32-bit multi-threaded architecture that exploits symmetrical
multiprocessing (SMP) and increases processor support to 6 from 2.
Enhanced SMP support allows more users per server, more simultaneous
sessions per server, and increased replication capacity.

Notes Release 4.0 servers implement multiple replicators, which increase
overall replication throughput and performance, alleviate administrators
from the burden of managing small incremental replication time frames, and
offer customers unparalleled information distribution capability. Notes
replication provides bi-directional synchronization between replica copies
of Notes databases, regardless of where the databases reside.

Field level replication, also new in Notes Release 4.0, optimizes
replication so that only the fields that have changed in a document are
replicated across Notes servers and clients. This feature reduces
replication time and expense, and provides efficient data management
across an enterprise. Previously entire documents were replicated to all
replica databases, even if the change was minor, such as the insertion of
a comma in a sentence.

In addition to increased support for symmetrical multiprocessing, server
performance enhancements include Notes server PassThrough, which allows
mobile users to access multiple servers in a single telephone connection.
With PassThrough, users are ensured easy access to information regardless
of where the information resides. PassThrough also allows clients on a LAN
to connect to servers running different network protocols; consequently,
network protocol complexities are eliminated and the need to configure
each system individually to conform to LAN or WAN infrastructure protocols
is alleviated. Additionally, with PassThrough, administrators now can
manage any server remotely despite disparate protocols.

ADMINISTRATION TOOLS OFFER EASE OF USE AND ENTERPRISE MESSAGE MANAGEMENT

Notes Release 4.0 includes intuitive administration tools that provide
centralized management and streamlined administration across an
enterprise. With these new tools, organizations can significantly reduce
training costs, the expertise required by administrators, and the number
of administrators who manage a Notes enterprise.

New Notes Release 4.0 administration tools include:

* ADMINISTRATIVE CONTROL PANEL: Provides a single graphical interface to
perform administrative actions and provides network administrators with
advanced message management. The control panel makes it easier and more
intuitive to manage users and groups, as well as view message logs and
manage several servers simultaneously from a single administrative
console.

* DELEGATED ADMINISTRATION: Offers administrators the ability to centralize
policy making and control, while at the same time delegate specific
administration tasks by assigning certain administration privileges or
roles. For example, a select team of administrators could be responsible
for maintaining mail routing and replication topology, while another group
could be solely accountable for adding and modifying user records. Because
each group has a different set of privileges, neither group can affect the
others' administrative assignments, regardless of having access to all
administration information worldwide via the Notes Name and Address Book
(NAB). Without sacrificing centralized control, delegated administration
allows for more secure operations of servers, minimizes the chance for
error, and increases administration efficiency and productivity.

* SERVER CONFIGURATION RECORD: Provides centralized management of server
configuration variables via the replicated Notes NAB. Administrators can
make a change at any server within the network and the change will be
applied to designated servers regardless of geographic location. The
Server Configuration Record also allows generic configuration (i.e.
setting the maximum number of mail threads for a group of servers that act
as mail hubs) to be completed and applied to all or a certain set of
servers. With this new tool, administrators can make global changes to
enterprise server configurations from anywhere on the network. The Server
Configuration Record also allows administrators to fine tune or
troubleshoot servers more easily.

* SERVER CONSOLE PANEL: Offers an easy-to-use, intuitive interface for more
streamlined administration. It groups functions and consolidates
administration information into a single panel with simple graphical
buttons for user, group, server, database, and certified administration
activities.

*N&A AND ACL MANAGEMENT TOOL: Automates the user administration process for
renaming and deleting users by making the necessary changes to all server
access lists, groups, and access control lists (ACL) throughout the Notes
environment in a secure, reliable manner. For administrators, this tool
greatly reduces the amount of time spent on maintaining and manually
updating user accounts and ACLs. It also allows for a more secure Notes
environment by guaranteeing that user accounts will be added to or deleted
from ACLs on all servers throughout the Notes enterprise.
