ELEVEN MAJOR PUBLIC COMMUNICATIONS CARRIERS FROM FOUR CONTINENTS TO OFFER
LOTUS NOTES

GENEVA, Oct. 3, 1995--Lotus Development Corp. today announced that 11
leading public communications carriers from four continents will offer
Lotus Notes as a strategic platform for networked business applications on
their data services networks. The carriers have also committed to work
toward interoperability with each other and with the other announced Notes
Public Networks carriers, AT&T and IBM.

The carriers are BT, CompuServe, Deutsche Telekom, Nippon Telegraph and
Telephone Corporation, NTT Data Communications Systems Corp., SNET,
Telstra, Telecom Italia, Telekom Malaysia, Unisource and US West.

"Today is a major milestone for Lotus, its customers and business
partners," said Jim Manzi, IBM senior vice president and Lotus' chief
executive officer. "These carriers have selected Notes to become core
infrastructure for the next generation of business applications that
require easy applications development, rapid deployment and industrial
strength security."With Notes Public Networks services, customers can
deploy Notes applications quickly and easily, taking advantage of the
scale and reliability of the public carrier's Notes network. By deploying
applications on Notes Public Networks, customers realize the benefit of
reduced cost of ownership through the carrier's management of the Notes
wide area network infrastructure and applications hosting environment.
Notes Public Networks services also provide security, billing, access
options and customer support services to enable customers to conduct work
electronically with their customers, partners and suppliers.

"By offering Notes Public Networks as a secure, reliable platform for
networked business applications, carriers are not only facilitating intra-
and inter-enterprise applications, but also are stimulating the formation
of new businesses," said Larry Moore, vice president, Lotus'
Interenterprise Communications Group. "Notes Public Networks services will
meet the needs of customers that require access to a worldwide Notes
network without having to build and support it themselves. And developers
of business-to-business mission critical applications will find this an
attractive networked public applications development platform."

The carriers are also committed to the goal of interoperability, allowing
business customers to offer applications and services that are easily
accessible to end users around the world. For example, a customer whose
application is hosted on a Notes Public Network will be able to send mail
or replicate a database with a user whose application is hosted on another
or several other Notes Public Networks. Lotus and several of the carriers
have proposed to use the Affiliate Networks Forum, also announced at
Telecom '95, as a forum on interoperability. "The availability of Notes
Public Networks from major communication carriers around the world will
establish Lotus Notes as the premier strategic platform for deployment of
business-to-business applications," said Bob Flanagan, Director, Workgroup
Strategies, the Yankee Group. "Interoperability among these carriers will
ensure inter- enterprise business teams can communicate and collaborate on
a truly global data network."

Notes Public Networks will also enhance and embrace the Internet and the
World Wide Web. Lotus InterNotes enables the Notes Public Networks to
create services through which customers will be able to easily publish and
integrate their Notes applications with information from the World Wide
Web. For example, World Wide Web users can interact with Notes business
process applications, like customer service and sales force automation, by
filling out a Notes form on a Web browser and submitting it back to a
Notes database. The information is then integrated into the application.

In addition to offering Notes as a platform for collaboration and
communication, carriers will also leverage Notes as a strategic platform
for business multimedia and other value-added services such as video
conferencing, electronic publishing and electronic commerce. Each carrier
has its own timeline for deployment of its Notes Public Networks services
and will be announcing its plans individually.
