MIPS "PENNY-A-PROCESSOR" CONTEST TO AWARD U.S. SCHOOL WITH ONE CENT FOR
EVERY MIPS CHIP THAT SHIPS THIS YEAR

Contest Could Mean Tens of Thousands of Dollars for A K-12 School

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (Oct. 4, 1995) -- MIPS Technologies, Inc., known for
designing the powerful microprocessors that power a wide range of products
from video game systems to supercomputers, today launched a nationwide
contest that will award to a U.S. primary or secondary school a penny for
every MIPS processor shipped in 1995.

With MIPS' processor volumes expected to more than double in 1995, the
contest could mean tens of thousands of dollars to a U.S. school hoping to
offset the escalating costs of education. MIPS, whose high-volume
processors are used in Sony's PlayStation video game system, personal
computers and in the graphics workstations used to create award-winning
special effects, shipped 1.67 million microprocessors in 1994. This high
volume makes MIPS the leader in the high-performance chip market known as
RISC (reduced instruction set computing). MIPS anticipates keeping its
lead and increasing its volumes in 1995.

"America's schools are the foundries of tomorrow's leaders and innovators,"
said Ed Murrer, vice president of marketing for MIPS Technologies. "As the
computer RISC leader, MIPS is pleased to provide a powerful way for the
winning school to address its most pressing needs with a significant cash
award. MIPS' acceptance around the world and its open business model are
key to generating the volumes necessary for this contest to richly benefit
one of our nation's schools."

Any primary or secondary (kindergarten through 12th grade) school in the
U.S. is eligible to enter the contest simply by sending a completed entry
form to MIPS Technologies. The form will ask for a description of the
school's most pressing need that could be met with the proceeds of the
contest. Needs could range from outfitting a classroom library with
computers to the purchase and installation of a new heating system. Entry
forms are available electronically through the MIPS World Wide Web site at
http://www.mips.com/HTMLs/PennySaver.html, through a fax-back service
(800-446-6477), through e-mail bonnieg@corp.sgi.com or by mail (B.
Gardiner, MIPS Technologies, 2011 N. Shoreline Blvd. M/S 410, Mountain
View, CA 94043). Completed forms must be returned to MIPS by Dec.31,
1995.

In 1994, MIPS ranked first among high-performance chip architectures
designed for computer systems. MIPS volume was larger than IBM/Apple's
PowerPC, three times larger than Sun Microsystems' SPARC, and five times
larger than Digital Equipment Corp.'s Alpha and Hewlett-Packard Co.'s
HP-PA combined.

MIPS Technologies, Inc. designs and supplies the world's most advanced RISC
microprocessor technology. The company tests, certifies and licenses its
processor technology to its semiconductor partners who provide processors
for the computer system, interactive consumer and embedded control
markets. MIPS microprocessors power systems from a number of computer
industry leaders, including Siemens Nixdorf AG, Silicon Graphics, Inc.,
Sony Corporation, Tandem Computers Incorporated, NEC Technologies, Inc.,
NeTpower Inc. and Tektronix, Inc. MIPS RISC architecture components are
available from world-class semiconductor companies, such as Integrated
Device Technology, Inc., LSI Logic Corporation, NEC Corporation, NKK
Corporation, Philips Semiconductor, Siemens AG and Toshiba Corporation.
MIPS Technologies, Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Silicon Graphics,
Inc. and is headquartered in Mountain View, Calif.
