NEWBRIDGE NETWORKS ANNOUNCES SINGLE MODE FIBER INTERFACE FOR VIVID YELLOW
RIDGE ATM-READY ETHERNET SWITCH

NEW TRANSMISSION INTERFACE INCREASES NETWORK FLEXIBILITY AND REDUCES COSTS
BY EXTENDING LINK BETWEEN ETHERNET SWITCH AND ATM BACKBONE TO 15
KILOMETERS

InterOp, Atlanta, GA., September 25, 1995 -- Newbridge Networks announced
today the addition of a single mode fiber interface to the VIVID Yellow
Ridge Ethernet switch, an edge switch providing Ethernet- to-ATM
connectivity that is part of the VIVID family of ATM LAN products. Single
mode fiber gives network managers greater flexibility in designing their
networks by extending the distance to 15 kilometers over which a Yellow
Ridge Ethernet switch and a VIVID Workgroup ATM Switch can be connected.
The standard version of the Yellow Ridge includes a multimode interface,
which accommodates a distance of up to two kilometers between the Yellow
RIdge and Workgroup Switch.

"Single mode fiber gives users more network design options and can save
them money," stated Rick Tinsley, Vice President and General Manager of
the VIVID Business Unit of Newbridge Networks. "Using single mode fiber,
organizations can build enterprise networks for large campus environments
or encompassing remote locations which would have presented problems in
the past. For example, a remote engineering office with a Yellow Ridge
Ethernet switch can connect to a Workgroup Switch at corporate
headquarters up to 15 kilometers away without having to deploy an
additional Workgroup Switch at the remote site." Previously, locations at
distances greater than two kilometers would have had to have their own
Workgroup Switch.

The VIVID Yellow Ridge switch can operate as both an Ethernet switch and as
part of an ATM LAN emulation network, automatically configuring itself for
the appropriate mode. It is a non-blocking, SNMP-manageable switch with 12
Ethernet ports and one ATM port. It delivers full wire-speed throughput
(about 180,000 packets per second) with an extremely low latency of
approximately 30 microseconds. The Yellow Ridge will also support
MPOA-routed LAN emulation as it becomes available. MPOA (Multi-Protocol
Over ATM) is an emerging ATM Forum standard for supporting network layer
routing over ATM networks.

The single mode fiber interface on the VIVID Yellow Ridge is scheduled for
customer availability in October 1995. The single mode fiber interface on
the Workgroup Switch has been available since July of this year.

The VIVID ATM LAN family is a comprehensive suite of products which
includes ATM switches, ATM network interface cards (NICs), edge switches,
route servers and end-to-end SNMP-based network management. The entire
product line is designed, manufactured and supported by Newbridge Networks
and complements the Newbridge industry-leading wide area 36150 MainStreet
ATMnet Access Switch and 36170 MainStreet ATMnet Backbone Switch. The
VIVID product line began volume production and shipments earlier this
year.

The VIVID product line will be demonstrated at Networld + Interop in
Atlanta, September 27-29, in the Newbridge booth (#216).
