NEWBRIDGE NETWORKS REDUCES ENTRY PRICE FOR ATM INTERNETWORKING

VIVID STARTER KIT BUNDLES EVERYTHING USERS NEED TO DEPLOY ATM LAN
INTERNETWORKING

InterOp, Atlanta, GA, September 25, 1995 -- Newbridge Networks today
announced a VIVID ATM Internetworking Starter Kit package that provides
the core components to implement a full ATM LAN emulation system. The
Starter Kit package simplifies the integration of ATM into the LAN
environment, reduces the time it takes to become operational, and its
attractive pricing removes the perceived cost-of entry barrier for ATM
migration.

The VIVID system allows users to create a complete LAN internetworking
system supporting Ethernet and ATM-attached users with wirespeed Ethernet
switching and Ethernet-to-ATM switching. Customers can also
cost-effectively expand their ATM LAN internetwork simply by plugging in
additional components. VIVID is the only LAN emulation system which may be
upgraded via a simple software change to standards-based routing and MPOA
(Multi-Protocol Over ATM), an emerging ATM Forum standard for supporting
network layer routing over ATM networks.

"The VIVID Starter Kit package greatly simplifies users' ability to deploy
ATM internetworking and is a key element to enable distributors to more
easily sell a complete ATM LAN emulation system," stated Rick Tinsley,
Vice President and General Manager of the VIVID Business Unit of
Newbridge. "By bundling all the components users need to get started and
pricing it very attractively, users who perhaps thought ATM was too
complex or expensive may now consider it."

The VIVID ATM LAN Starter Kit package is available today, through direct
and indirect sales channels, with a suggested price of $49, 995. The
Starter Kit comprises a VIVID Yellow Ridge Ethernet switch, a VIVID
Workgroup Switch, a pre-configured VIVID Route Server, VIVID System
Manager software, and a VIVID S-Bus ATM network interface card (NIC).

The VIVID family of products offers users a high performance, scalable ATM
LAN architecture that enables the internetworking of legacy LANs with ATM
switching technology without the limitations associated with collapsed
backbone routers. The product suite includes the VIVID Yellow Ridge
switch, an edge device that operates as both an Ethernet switch or an
Ethernet-to-ATM switch, converting Ethernet frames to ATM cells for
delivery over the ATM fabric. The Yellow Ridge switch provides 12 switched
Ethernet ports and one ATM port, and delivers full wire-speed throughput
with low latency.

The VIVID ATM Workgroup Switch is a 12-port, 1.6Gbps non-blocking switch
packaged in a compact stackable unit. Each port operates at up to 155Mbps
over multimode fiber. A single mode fiber option is available for both the
Workgroup Switch and Yellow Ridge Ethernet switch. The VIVID Route Server
connects to the ATM network, providing routing calculations and automatic
routing table updates for Workgroup Switches, ridges and ATM-attached
network interface cards (NICs). The ATM Workgroup Switch and Yellow Ridge
Ethernet switch, when combined with the Newbridge VIVID ATM network
adapters, Route Server, and SNMP-based network management, comprise a
complete ATM LAN emulation solution. The VIVID product line began volume
production and shipments earlier this year.
