Under New Management: Family Studies Database

Published in association with the National Council on Family Relations

New life breathed into file NISC is committed to making the important
Family Studies Database more thorough and useful. The quality and quantity
of literature cited have been increased. There are better abstracts as
well as improved descriptors and identifiers. The database has been
redesigned for popular appeal as well as to fulfill the needs of social
scientists and family practitioners. See the sample record on the reverse
for details.

NISC owns and is developing the Family Studies Database for the same
reasons it has made ERIC on CD-ROM and the Child Abuse and Neglect CD-ROM
available at low or no cost. This NISC DISC belongs in every library with
public patrons. Anyone interested in family research can enjoy convenient
access to this valuable data at a very affordable rate.

Continuing & improving where the print version left off

The printed version, the Inventory of Marriage & Family Literature (IMFL),
is discontinued after Volume XX. Print subscribers are encouraged to try
the CD-ROM, which features abstracts and keyword indexing and is issued
quarterly. Over 1,000 new citations have been added to the previous
135,000. The convenience, better means of access, and more frequent
updates are sure to make the transition to CD-ROM very worthwhile.

New, improved features

* record structure similar to ERIC's
* abstracts more substantial & improved
* better indexing includes both descriptors (controlled subject terms)
and document specific identifiers, a more authoritative thesaurus is
  under development
* coverage: is expanded in both scope and number of journals; is more
up-to-date; includes new types of materials; is more international
* Source field provides the number of illustrations & references
  in the document
* new records are produced in proper form (capitalized lowercase)
  instead of full caps

Coverage to expand!

NISC not only assures continuation of the database, but will expand its
scope to include additional research and types of publications.
Approximately 6,000 records will be added per year.

Whether you are new to Family Studies Database, a print subscriber, or a
former user of Family Resources (former name of the online file), you will
find much to like about the world's most comprehensive, up-to-date
bibliographic database on the family social sciences.

New NISC DISC

Family Studies Database (1970-present) is the world's most comprehensive,
systematic, and nonevaluative resource of valuable research literature in
the family social sciences. Over 135,000 bibliographic records and
abstracts are drawn from approximately 800 professional journals and a
variety of books. Approximately 6,000 records are added per year. This
important coverage is now available on a NISC DISC, and is destined to
become a core resource in our series of CD-ROMs on family-related topics.

NISC produces as well as publishes Family Studies Database, which formerly
was produced by the National Council on Family Relations (NCFR) in
Minneapolis, Minnesota as Family Resources. It contains all the records of
the discontinued print version, Inventory of Marriage & Family Literature

the Family Studies Centers, a directory of family-life research agencies.
Since 1990, only journals and books are cited and abstracted.

While Family Studies Database is an English-language database, it can be
searched in either English or Spanish. Other languages for the software
are forthcoming. As with other features, the librarian can choose which
languages are available to users.
