Novell Rolls Out Roadmap for NetWare Telephony Services and TSAPI

New technologies, products and services to accelerate growth of Computer
Telephony Integration Market

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- (Oct. 23, 1995) -- Novell, Inc. today announced a
comprehensive roadmap to the future of its NetWare Telephony Services
(NTS) and Telephony Services API (TSAPI). The roadmap includes new
products, technologies and programs to support independent software
vendors, original equipment manufacturers and reseller partners in the
development and marketing of computer telephony integration solutions.

NetWare Telephony Services and TSAPI are already de facto industry
standards. Over 43 shipping products and 17 telephone switch drivers are
available from the more than 100 ISVs and 26 switch manufacturers who have
committed support for NetWare Telephony Services. These NTS solutions
leverage its connection between telephone and computer networks, allowing
users to easily control telephone equipment from a personal computer
screen through the data network. Novell is the only software vendor to
deliver a complete standards-based computer telephony platform as an
integrated network service, lowering the cost of customer solutions and
greatly simplifying administration and management.

Novell's network telephony roadmap is designed to further establish NetWare
Telephony Services and TSAPI as the premier platform for network-based
computer telephony integration (CTI), fueling the growth of the CTI
marketplace ten-fold by 1998. Novell's network telephony roadmap
includes:

Novell will integrate voice services into the NetWare Telephony Services
platform. Through an open API and shared voice-hardware architecture, NTS
will become the leading network platform for services such as speech
recognition and text-to-speech, and voice applications such as interactive
voice response and voicemail.

Novell will publish the voice platform API specification during Q1 1996,
allowing developers to begin planning and development activities to
utilize features including tone generation/detection and audio
record/playback. During the second half of 1996, Novell will deliver these
new integrated services as part of the NetWare Telephony Services
platform.

Novell will deliver new programs and specifications to ensure
interoperability between NTS based solutions. Available immediately,

Novell has released a normalization specification for the common features
of NTS switch drivers. Applications using the specification as
implementation guide will be compatible with any telephone switches with
drivers written to conform to the specification.

This specification will be the basis for a new testing and approved program
that will begin before the end of Q1 1996. Novell has also opened an
integration and testing lab at its San Jose facility.

Switch manufacturers have the opportunity to install equipment in the lab,
offering developers a single location to integrate and test extended
features of variety of switches.

Novell will simplify desktop access to and extend the call control API
services of NTS. Available immediately, Novell has delivered aDynamic Data
Exchange (DDE) specification to simplify access and integration of
telephony applications. Designed to standardize common telephony
middleware features, this specification can be used by DDE compatible
applications as a high level alternative to access NTS call control
capabilities. Later in 1996, Novell will extend NTS call control services
to deliver advanced features such as call/data correlator, which allows
synchronized transfer of a call as well as the date needed for the call.

Novell will ensure delivery of affordable, shrink-wrapped CTI solutions to
the retail channel. Continuing its NetWare Telephony Solutions Center
program, Novell will broker partner solutions combined with NTS through
distributors. In Q1 1996, Novell will also deliver a new middleware CTI
platform, code named CPS. Designed to deliver the value of CTI to the
knowledge workers' desktop,

CPS will serve as a tool to simplify integration of existing and future CTI
solutions. Included as part of CPS, Novell will provide point-and-click
telephone control extensions to GroupWise, cc:Mail, Microsoft Mail,
Perfect Office and Microsoft Office.

Novell will deliver pervasive access to corporate and public telephone
services for telecommuters and central office switch service customers
from a broad range of computing environments and intelligent devices.

In Q1 1996, Novell will detail its plans for remote access to NTS to
deliver full access to corporate telephone switch services such as
long-distance line access, conferencing, transfer and screen pop. In
addition, Novell has begun efforts to integrate public data and telephone
networks in the infrastructure for inter- enterprise networking provided
be NetWare Connect Services. Novell will further develop NTS access as
component of Net2000, its comprehensive strategy for delivering access to
NetWare services from heterogeneous platforms.

Growing the Telephony Market

In 1994, the link software and application software portion of the computer
telephony integration market was $154 million, according to Dataquest. By
1998, it is expected to grow to $2.8 billion, excluding existing or new
telephone infrastructures and computing resources.

"Just as telephones are within reach of virtually everyone, Novell will
bring computer telephony integration to any size company, whether it's a
five-person office or a global corporation with multiple call centers,"
said Tom Steding, vice president of Novell's Communication Infrastructure
Division. "By working with our telephony partners to deliver new products
and services, Novell will help change the telecommunications paradigm.
Novell will help unify the data and telephone networks into one network
that will provide customers with capabilities they never before thought
possible."

In order to reach the projected industry growth rates, Novell's telephony
product roadmap will be implemented in partnership with the industry's
leading telephony companies. "Novell's own initiatives must support and
complement the efforts of our telephony partners," Steding said. "Our key
partners will play a major role in completing Novell's vision, and Novell
will soon make product announcements that demonstrate how were working
together."

Novell plans to make several partner and product announcements in
conjunction with the Second Annual TSAPI conference, co-sponsored by AT&T,
Nortel, Novell, Siemens ROLM and Versit, scheduled for October 24-25 in
San Francisco.
