Multimedia-based CBT tutorial for R/3 programmers

October 16, 1995 -- MUNICH. SIEMENS NIXDORF INFORMATIONSSYSTEME AG'S CENTER
FOR INTERACTIVE COMPUTER MEDIA SYSTEMS IS NOW OFFERING A CBT (COMPUTER
BASED TRAINING) TUTORIAL FOR ABAP/4, THE SAP'S PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE FOR
INTERACTIVE DEVELOPMENT OF APPLICATION PROGRAMS. THIS MULTIMEDIA TUTORIAL
IS ONE ELEMENT OF AN INTEGRATED TRAINING CONCEPT, I.E. CBT-SUPPORTED
TUTORIAL PHASES AND PERSONAL TRAINING IN THE FORM OF WORKSHOPS AND FORMAL
COURSES MUTUALLY COMPLEMENT ONE ANOTHER. SYSTEMS '95

The task-oriented CBT tutorial contains three basic modules, which can be
employed either individually or in combination with one another:
Programming tools (basic functions of the development environment and
ABAP/4 programming, control statements, test and debug functions, program
management and administration). Fundamentals of report generation (file
access methods, internal data editing, modularization, user interfaces).
Sample tasks (direct data provision listings, report structure
modularization, logical database listings, extension to include special
functions). An integrated dictionary explains all relevant ABAP/4
vocabulary. Depending upon the user's level of knowledge, the tutorial
takes between eight and 20 hours to complete. The multimedia tutorial for
the ABAP/4 programming language costs DM 5,400* for use in a stand-alone
environment and DM 10,800* for the network version. Although only
available in German at the moment, an English-language version is
currently in preparation.

As a result of R/3's outstanding popularity, there is a huge need for
introducing this standard software suite from SAP. Enterprise- specific
adaptations can be made to the R/3 software with the aid of the ABAP/4
programming language. The tutorial from Siemens Nixdorf is intended for
use by project managers, system support specialists and software
developers with programming experience who are already familiar with the
R/3 system architecture. The ABAP/4 CBT tutorial utilizes multimedia
components and "talks" to the student (via speakers or headphones) as he
or she works through the tasks. It is also possible to use on-screen texts
instead of the audio elements.

The minimum system requirements for the user consist of a PC with 486
processor, 4 MB of RAM (8 MB are advisable), mouse, color monitor, VGA
card (minimum resolution 800 x 600 pixels, 16 colors), CD-ROM drive (MPC
standard), Windows-compatible sound card, Windows 3.1 with multimedia
extensions and around 3 MB of available space on a local hard disk.

The Siemens Nixdorf Center for Interactive Computer Media Systems offers a
broad portfolio of CBT tutorials for SAP R/3, PC applications/operating
systems, work techniques/business administration/edutainment, software
development and systems technology.
