Wide range of multimedia, ranging from media server and tele-cooperation to
WWW presentations

October 16, 1995 -- MUNICH. THE SYSTEMS '95 TRADE FAIR SAW SIEMENS NIXDORF
DEMONSTRATING ITS EXPERTISE IN THE MULTIMEDIA FIELD WITH NUMEROUS
INNOVATIVE PRODUCTS AND SOLUTIONS, RANGING FROM THE RM MEDIA SERVER AND
VIDEO DIGITIZING TO TELE-COOPERATION. WITH THE "SYSTEMS 95" TRADE FAIR
INFORMATION SYSTEM FOR THE MESSE MUNCHEN GMBH IT ALSO IMPLEMENTED A WWW
APPLICATION WITH FACILITIES FOR ORDERING BROCHURES AND CATALOGS AND FOR
INTERROGATING THE TRADE FAIR CATALOG IN THE WORLD WIDE WEB.

MEDIA HARDWARE

RM Media Server plus was the slogan used by Siemens Nixdorf in the
Multimedia City at Systems '95, smoothing the way to possible multimedia
applications of the future. The RM Media Server is a state-of-the- art
UNIX system (risc multiprocessors, ATM, MPEG 2, broadband communication).
In conjunction with innovative client terminals such as MediaStar, it
forms the product base for professional multimedia applications.

The MediaStar is a fully-featured Windows PC which is also a convenient
television. Combined with an RM Media Server it provides the basis for
applications such as the "hotel room office and cinema". The Proinfo
multimedia information terminal consists of a high-end PC with sound card,
CD ROM drive, active loudspeakers and touch-screen 17" monitor. Videos are
integrated using software-compressed AVI files or via video boards. For
future applications the ProInfo terminal has expansion facilities for
keyboards, card readers and much more besides and for linkage to computers
and databases. With the RM Media Server plus Proinfo as basic hardware
Siemens Nixdorf showed how multimedia-based shopping-on-demand can make
shopping a whole new experience. The Siemens Nixdorf PC-based realtime
video encoding system developed by a partner company allows full motion
video to be created for multimedia applica-tions. RM Media Server plus the
Digitizing Station allow multimedia information to be digitized online.
The MediaStar is used to process and archive the information.

SOLUTIONS FOR TELE-COOPERATION

Sietec Systemtechnik, Berlin, a 100-percent Siemens Nixdorf-owned
subsidiary, demonstrated its multimedia expertise at Systems '95 in areas
of application requiring a high degree of coordination and harmonization
between geographically-remote partners. Examples werde presented in
application areas such as tele-schooling, tele-maintenance,
tele-administration and tele-construction.

Sietec Systemtechnik's multimedia solutions are based on JointX, a software
which is expandable and open for new technical developments such as
multipoint audio/video conferences in which a number of local networks can
be linked to each other via ISDN. JointX uses international standard H.320
for transmission of video and audio data. The underlying communication
protocol is TCP/IP. Each subscriber is given the full functionality of the
program concerned, for example desktop publishing or CAD. JointX-based
tele-cooperation allows a multimedia conference via screen between any
number of people without any of them having to leave their workstation.
From every conference monitor, points in the document can be marked or
comments and remarks recorded in a separate window (chatbox) outside the
document. All participants are shown the changes made simultaneously. In
addition the tele-cooperation partners can also communicate with each
other via an audio/video connection. Mobile tele-cooperation is made
possisble with the still image conversion solution MediaView for Windows
PCs. Digital images with differing levels of quality, right up to
high-resolution originals, are recorded under MediaView using a camera or
a commercially-available scanner. Using recognized market standards such
as CAPI, TAPI and MCI MediaView can be incorporated into an existing EDP
infrastructure.

WWW PRESENTATIONS

After the pilot projects 'Bavaria online' and the 'Oktoberfest in WWW', the
trade fair information system "Systems 95" was created for and in
conjunction with the Messe Munich GmbH company in the World Wide Web for
visitors, exhibitors and journalists. The information, which was provided
in German and English on a WWW server from Siemens Nixdorf could be called
up already before the Systems '95 over the internet. The Siemens Nixdorf
line of Business Training and Services has created the home page in WWW
format. The "Systems '95" home page is based on the HMTL V2.0 Standard
with Netscape extensions. From the home page of the WWW trade fair
information system, callers could jump to the introductory pages for the
following subject areas: What's on offer at Systems '95, Visitor
Information, Forums and Conventions, Exhibitor Information and "A look
back to 93". Graphical navigation aids guide the user rapidly to any
desired subject.

WWW users could call up hall plans with exhibition topics, search for
company names or products in the electronic trade fair catalog,
information about expert conventions, have the forum fees displayed and
obtain information about innovation topics and current trends in the
traditional exhibition focal points. Journalists were provided with
late-breaking news, a newsletter and press releases. Via the WWW brochures
and catalogs could be ordered at the Messe Munich GmbH (the company
running the trade fair).
