SPA Receives Grant From U.S. Dept. of Commerce

Certified Software Manager course will be offered throughout Latin America

October 25, 1995 (Washington, D.C.) - The Software Publishers Association
(SPA) announced today it has been awarded a U.S. Department of Commerce
grant to assist SPA in developing its Certified Software Manager (CSM)
course for Latin America. Through implementation of the grant, SPA will
offer the CSM course, a one-day software asset management seminar, in a
total of 27 cities throughout 17 countries in Latin America.

The grant was awarded as part of the Market Development Cooperator Program,
a public-private sector partnership aimed at increasing U.S. exports
through innovative export marketing projects. SPA was chosen along with
nine other nonprofit trade organizations to support export development
efforts.

SPA's CSM course, an educational seminar already underway in North America,
provides assistance to MIS managers, auditors and system administrators in
setting up effective software management policies. The course material
deals in depth with those issues related to performing effective software
audits, educating employees about copyright law and implementing a company
software policy. By promoting the legal use of software, SPA helps create
a more receptive market for U.S. software publishers exporting their
products abroad.

The CSM course has already premiered successfully in England, Germany,
France, Poland and Israel Under the auspices of the Department of
Commerce, SPA will offer the CSM course in both Mexico City and Bogota,
Colombia, this fall, as well as throughout Latin America in the coming
year.

The CSM course is part of SPA's ongoing anti-piracy campaign, which is
balanced between education and enforcement. SPA distributes free
educational brochures, posters and SPA's auditing software (SPAudit and
KeyAudit). SPA also offers videos and the Software Management Guide as
resources to the public for nominal charges. Each of these materials and
programs is designed to help organizations comply with copyright law.

To report instances of copyright infringement or receive educational
materials on the copyright law, please call SPA's anti-piracy hotline at
(800) 388-7478 or contact SPA at : piracy@spa.org.

SPA is the principal trade association of the PC software industry. Its
more than 1,200 members represent the leading publishers in the business,
consumer and education markets. SPA has offices in Washington, D.C., and
Paris, France.
