SYBASE EXTENDS ITS COMMITMENT TO SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT WITH SQL SERVER SUPPORT
OF SNMP

SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) Allows Sybase Customers to Easily
Work with Popular Systems Management Platforms

EMERYVILLE, CA, October 16, 1995 -- Sybase, Inc., The Enterprise
Client/Server Company, today announced Sybase SQL Server support for
simple network management protocol (SNMP). Support for SNMP will enhance
Sybase's systems management offering by allowing customers to use their
favorite SNMP management stations to see and monitor SQL Server databases
on the network. For ISVs, this means their SNMP management stations can
now access the Sybase MIB (management information base), which describes
the aspects of Sybase database servers they can monitor, and provide
value-add services such as integrated database and network monitoring.

Support for SNMP will enable Sybase SQL Server customers to see SQL Server
database servers via SNMP and also monitor high-level Sybase database
events from popular systems management platforms, including HP OpenView,
IBM SystemView for AIX and Sun Solstice products.

"By supporting SNMP we're extending our long tradition of openness at
Sybase," said Jeffrey Klofft, managing director of systems management
products at Sybase. "We provide our customers with options on how to
manage their environments -- the customers decide which one works best for
them."

Sybase Open Systems Options

In all, Sybase fits into any customer environment by providing five
monitoring options designed to leverage popular standards and third party
initiatives:

* Customer applications and third-party products that use the Sybase
  performance monitoring API;
* Third-party products that use SNMP;
* Customer applications and third-party products that access SQL
  Server systems tables;
* Object-oriented products using the Tivoli Management Framework and;
* The graphical display of Sybase SQL Server Monitor or the alerts of
  Enterprise SQL Server Manager.

"Our customers want to use the HP OpenView Solution Framework to manage
their entire distributed computing environment, which includes their
distributed databases," said Robert Hoog, general manager for
Hewlett-Packard's Network and System Management Division. "The SNMP
capability in Sybase SQL Server will provide them a powerful way to
monitor Sybase databases located throughout an enterprise from an HP
OpenView central console."

"We are very pleased that Sybase is extending the capability of Enterprise
SQL Server to include SNMP," said Gale Meyer, manager, system view
technology relationships, IBM Networking Software. "The new SNMP support
will benefit SystemView customers, giving them increased flexibility and
ease in managing their databases."

"Sybase's support for SNMP will enable our customers to monitor high-level
Sybase database events using Sun's Solstice SunNet Manager and Solstice
Enterprise Manager. These events include whether a database is
operational, whether there is sufficient disk space and how many people
are using a particular database," said Walt O'Maley, senior product
manager for Solstice at Sun. "Synergy of monitoring and management systems
is the heart of Solstice."

Sybase Database Administration Products: Enterprise CONTROL

In addition to third-party products that utilize SNMP and Sybase systems
tables, third parties are excited about the Sybase performance monitoring
API, because it enables their monitoring tools to operate across a wide
range of Sybase product releases, without requiring updates to their own
tools. The performance monitoring API was announced in April.

Customers that want a management tool from Sybase have a choice of robust
database monitoring and management products designed specifically for
Sybase databases.

Enterprise SOL Server Manager

Based on the Tivoli Management Environment, Enterprise SQL Server Manager
is the only generally available DBA product that enables simultaneous
control of hundreds of Sybase database servers, making administration
faster and cheaper. Enterprise SQL Server Manager can monitor and
automatically respond to pre-defined database events, saving
administrators from dealing with common problems, and reducing potential
downtime by automatically fixing the system.

In addition, Enterprise SQL Server Manager can share high-level database
event information with network monitoring tools via the event services
available with the Tivoli Management Framework. This framework offers
several advantages over other protocols, especially its profile-based
management, security, and proven scalability. Enterprise SQL Server
Manager integrates easily -- leveraging the emerging OMG and X/Open
standards -- with third-party management tools, providing IT professionals
with unmatched flexibility to choose the systems management products that
best meet their needs.

"In addition to the benefits provided by integration with the Tivoli
Management Environment, ESSM embodies the same event monitoring
infrastructure on which the Tivoli/Sentry product is built", said Russ
Caccamisi, vice president of marketing for Tivoli Systems Inc. "This means
that Sybase and Tivoli customers will be able to implement a common
architecture, look-and-feel, and event management paradigm for the
configuration, monitoring, and control of systems and databases."

SOL Server Monitor

For detailed database performance monitoring, SQL Server Monitor, currently
scheduled for general availability late 1995, definitely gives database
managers an up-close view of database performance and helps to identify
potential bottlenecks. SQL Server Monitor, the follow-on product to the
existing SQL Monitor product, features an easy-to-use graphical interface,
object-level data access, and the ability to view real-time performance
information and historical performance trends. SQL Server Monitor is
complemented by the SQL Server Manager product, Sybase's icon-based tool
for managing local or remote SQL Server databases, which began shipping in
late 1994.

Sybase in Database Administration

Sybase has been offering database administration products since 1990 with
its release of SA Companion. Today, in addition to SQL Server Manager,
Enterprise SQL Server Manager and SQL Server Monitor, Sybase's systems
management products include Backup Server for on-line backups, Audit
Server for enhanced security environments, Replication Server Manager for
replication management, and Gateway Manager for heterogeneous data access.

Pricing and Availability

Support for SNMP is available now and is priced at $400.00 for each managed
SQL Server.
