INDUSTRY FIRST 100 MB/SECOND FIBRE CHANNEL-BASED RAID CONTROLLER AND
SUBSYSTEM FROM SYMBIOS LOGIC PREVIEWS AN AGGRESSIVE I/O TECHNOLOGY
STRATEGY WITH FAR-REACHING MARKET & CUSTOMER BENEFITS

WICHITA, KS-- Major OEMs seeking new, long-range solutions for a wide
variety of data-intensive applications that are rapidly outstripping
traditional I/O bandwidth, have been helped to an early, competitive lead
with today's launch of the Series 3 fibre channel-based RAID controller
and subsystem offering from Symbios Logic.

An industry first in the rapidly emerging and widely-anticipated Fibre
Channel arena, this new RAID controller and subsystem, part of Symbios
Logic's Series 3 family, features a burst-mode data transfer rate of 100
megabytes per second -- four times faster than any RAID controller or
subsystem solution available today.

In addition to providing an ultra high-bandwidth option for OEMs
increasingly hampered by the limits of traditional data I/O solutions,
this new high-speed fibre channel RAID product from Symbios Logic delivers
significant benefits unique to the fibre channel-based approach for
storing, sending and receiving data. These include:

* data transport capability up to 100MB/sec -- 100MB is the
equivalent of approximately 60,000 pages of text

* superior configurability with a reliable data transfer range up to
10 kilometers -- making possible remote storage with backup sites
miles away from the host computer

* support for clustered systems -- multiple workstations linked
together can approach and exceed the applications and data
  horsepower of supercomputers and mainframes

* exceptional fault tolerance -- no single point of failure

* support for hot pluggable disk drives, RAID controllers, power
  supplies and fans.

Featuring support of arbitrated loop, switched or point-to-point topologies
on the Fibre Channel host interface, the Series 3 Fibre Channel RAID
controller is built around Symbios Logic's Series 3 RAID architecture, and
supports RAID levels 0, 1, 3, 5. The controller has 5 Fast-20 SCSI drive
interfaces, can accommodate up to 128 MB cache memory and provides battery
backup support circuitry for the code memory. As part of the Series 3
family of RAID products announced last October, the Series 3 RAID
subsystem offers up to 80 GB capacity with 20 16-bit 4 GB SCSI drives and
is available in either a rack-mount or desk-side configuration. All
components including disk drives, fan modules, controllers and power
supplies are customer-removable and hot-swappable while the unit is fully
operational.

"Our Series 3 Fibre Channel RAID controller and subsystem open new
possibilities for configurability, clustering of systems and substantially
higher performance," said Ron Engelbrecht, managing director of OEM RAID
products for Symbios Logic. "When used with Symbios Logic's SYM1062O
PCI-Fibre Channel host bus adapter and new host software driver
architecture offering operating system-independent, scalable intelligent
and non-intelligent I/O solutions, our Series 3 Fibre Channel RAID
products provide an end-to-end solution that affords greater flexibility,
lower overall development costs and reduces time-to-market."

Symbios Logic estimates that the majority of all standard data-intensive
transaction-processing applications typically found in finance,
transportation, retailing and service industries will eventually be
accelerated, expanded, or generally improved through the application of
fibre channel-based technology. The most pressing demand, however, is
expected to come immediately from OEMs seeking to design systems that can
keep up with the extraordinary data transfer rates and large file sizes
associated with data-intensive and high-speed networking applications.
These range from medical imaging, real-time video, multimedia, and voice
processing to image-based document management systems, geophysical
mapping, satellite imaging, CAD/CAE, and scientific visualization.

To meet this need, according to the Fibre Channel Association, more than
100 companies are currently developing Fibre Channel-based products.
"While SCSI-based standards continue to be aggressively supported and
advanced by many companies including Symbios Logic, we expect the market
for Fibre Channel-based RAID controllers alone to approach $100 million
within the next two years," said Engelbrecht.

-- Series 3 Family, Including SCSI, Fast-20 and Fibre Channel-Based
RAID Technologies Sets Clear Migration Path For OEM Needs --

"We are out ahead with the most aggressive fibre channel product offering
in the RAID space today primarily because we have both the technological
expertise and a unique appreciation of the OEM design-in cycle which must
include product, marketing, and migration support as new and exciting
solutions such as this make their way into the mainstream," said
Engelbrecht.

"We believe it is time to push ahead in a leadership role like this because
the technology is here, and the market demands it. We're very confident we
can minimize our OEM customers' risks, and optimize their time-to-market
when they are ready to migrate to Fibre Channel-based RAID products. The
Series 3 Fibre Channel controllers and subsystems are real, ready,
compatible with -- and can coexist alongside -- our traditional I/O
solutions, and we have a solid blueprint of ongoing Fibre Channel-based
products and other I/O technologies on the way. I believe this presents a
very compelling set of business advantages for OEMs seeking a sensible,
all-products partner for information storage and data communications."

In support of Engelbrecht's theme of readiness and OEM risk minimization
during a period of technology transition from parallel to serial, Symbios
Logic, which was a co-developer of the SCSI standard in the early 1980s,
aggressively extended the performance range of this proven technology this
summer. In August, the Company launched its Series 3 Fast-20 RAID
controller and subsystem which doubles, to 40MB per second, the data
transfer rates of SCSI-based solutions. Volume shipments of this product
will begin this coming December.

The Series 3 Fibre Channel RAID controller, priced at $4,995 OEM
quantity-one, is scheduled to begin volume shipping in February, 1996.

Symbios Logic creates technology solutions for moving and storing data and
provides a full spectrum of products that are key to storage and data
transport, including integrated circuits, boards, and storage systems. The
Company focuses on developing partnerships with customers, including
original equipment manufacturers and resellers, in the networked
computing, peripheral, and communications markets.
