Employees feel far more productive in home office

October 23, 1995 -- WASHINGTON -- More than three-quarters of current
telecommuters say they are more productive at home, primarily because of
fewer interruptions and use of home office technologies, according to a
Telecommute America! survey conducted via an 800 number and on the
Internet since late June.

Despite the potential of this alternative workstyle to produce more and
better work, 61 percent of would-be teleworkers have never even asked
their employers permission to telecommute.

Most of those polled who said they want to telecommute, but are afraid to
ask, fear their managers will view them as less than serious or committed
workers.

Prospective teleworkers recognize the potential to be more productive and
to improve their work/personal life balance at the same time according to
Tom Miller of Find/SVP, who conducted the study. But they believe their
employer might not support such a workstyle and are reluctant to ask
especially in a downsizing and merger environment.

The same group said their main reason for wanting to telecommute was to
help balance their work and personal life. This contention is borne out by
the experience of current telecommuters, some 90 percent of whom said
telecommuting has helped them to do so.

The survey also revealed that personal computers, modems and the Internet
are widely perceived as enabling telework.
