                LESSON 3: ACCESSING EMBEDDED LINKS IN ABSTRACTS

================================================================================

              - Return to beginner's search tutorial <FILE031>
              - Return to navigation in hypertext <3A263C>
              - Return to LESSON 2.2 <FILE034>

================================================================================

              In the previous lesson, you should have completed
              it by looking at file <ABS07>. Invoke it again, and
              notice the link highlighted in brackets, which
              includes the term "TASTE."

              Links situated in an abstract are called "embedded
              links" because the links are located in an abstract
              rather than in a listing of themes, topics,
              sub topics, or associated topics. Links found in
              listings, incidently, are called "network" or
              "classification" or "taxonomic" links, which will
              lead you to other network links or to abstracts.

              Most of the embedded links lead to files of various
              classification/taxonomic listings. These files are
              ALWAYS labeled - within the brackets - with "LK" and
              numbers following these letters. Abstract files are
              ALWAYS labeled - within the brackets - with "ABS"
              and numbers following these letters.

              In terms of these two basic file types, the search
              method in hypertext is fairly simple. You usually
              begin with the listings of classification/taxonomic
              files, which lead you to abstracts. You can go to
              other classification/taxonomic files from the
              abstracts or to other abstracts, depending on if
              direct links to other abstracts occur in the
              abstract you are viewing. This process can be
              repeated as many times as you search.

                         In hypertext, you are using a
                           search-by-browsing method
                       of finding sought-for information
                    - a new information retrieval concept!
                                  <LK104 2 4>

              With this lesson you now know how to find
              information in this hypertext system by way of
              subjects, themes, topics, etc. The next and final
              lesson dwells on accessing information by title,
              article authors, researchers and accession numbers.

              /// PROCEED TO LESSON 4: OTHER SEARCH ANGLES
