SYMANTEC RELEASES THE BEDROCK ARCHITECTURE CD
--First Look at Cross-Platform Application Framework--

CUPERTINO, Calif. -- May 12, 1993-- Symantec Corporation (NASDAQ:SYMC)
today announced the availability of the Bedrock Architecture CD, a CD-ROM
disk that allows software developers to familiarize themselves with the
Bedrock cross-platform application framework technology.

Bedrock allows programmers to deliver the same application on Windows and
Macintosh in a single effort. This technology will speed the design of
commercial and corporate development and improve the quality and
maintainability of applications. Symantec Corporation and Apple Computer,
Inc. announced a strategic alliance to jointly develop Bedrock in June of
1992. The Bedrock Architecture CD, a CD-ROM for use on both Apple
Macintosh and Microsoft Windows computers, is designed to give potential
Bedrock developers a technical overview of the framework.

Bedrock represents the state-of-the-art in application framework
technology. An application framework provides a common set of building
blocks or "objects" that give developers the basic structure tor an
application. This framework enables developers to create applications more
quickly and easily while providing the freedom to innovate.

"Corporate and commercial developers lace the challenge of quickly
developing applications for both Macintosh and Windows platforms," said
Gene Wang, Symantec's executive vice president of applications and
development tools. "Bedrock will speed-up application development in this
rapidly changing environment and developers will find the Bedrock
Architecture CD to be valuable in planning their transition to the Bedrock
framework."

"The Apple/Symantec relationship is producing technology that will alter
the dynamics of software development around the world," said Steve Weyl,
Apple's director of development tools group. "In addition to shortening
development cycles, Bedrock will allow companies to develop more reliable
and maintainable products, as well as enable them to more efficiently
localize products in global markets."

A Glimpse Into Bedrock

There are three main components of the Bedrock Architecture CD: Bedrock
header files, on-line documentation and Bedrock sample programs.

Bedrock Header Files: These header files define the objects that are
provided by the Bedrock Application Framework and describe how they are
organized. They provide an understanding of the hierarchy of the framework
and precisely define the data structure of any type of object in the
Bedrock framework.

On-line Documentation: On-line documentation gives developers a first look
at preliminary Bedrock documentation. The CD includes a hypertext utility
for browsing, searching and printing documentation. Also included on the
CD is a series of Bedrock-related white papers.

Sample Programs: Several sample Bedrock applications are included on the
CD. Source code and executables provide developers with examples of how to
build applications. These include a paint program, a WYSIWYG editor and
the most basic GUI application.

Availability

A limited supply of Bedrock Architecture CDs are offered at no charge to
members of Symantec's Bedrock Partners Program. Developers may apply to
this program by calling the Bedrock Information Hotline at (408) 446-8931.
The Architecture CD will be followed by an early developer's release in
the fourth quarter of 1993. The product will be available through Apple
and Symantec distribution channels.
