Dolch Launches Family of Scalable Presentation Portables

New York, New York, June 29, 1993--Dolch Computer Systems today announced
the MEDIAMACH family, the world's first fully integrated presentation
portables. Based on Dolch's scalable MACH platform, these power
presentation tools separate into two distinct function modules--the
COMPOSERSLICE and the PRESENTATIONPLAYER that securely mate to form a
complete portable multimedia production and delivery system. Then, after
the presentation has been created, only the convenient, lightweight
PRESENTATIONPLAYER is required for taking it on the road--the
COMPOSERSLICE is easily detached and left behind. And, every MEDIAMACH
comes complete with all of the required sound, video and multimedia
software and hardware installed and ready to run. No mess, no fuss! Dolch
multimedia experts have taken care of all the integration problems.
MEDIAMACH is the only multimedia presentation system that combines the
expansion capability and power of a desktop with the convenience of a
portable.

Scalable Expansion

MACH platforms are uniquely scalable through the use of one and two-inch
MultiSlice modules. The capability for adding slots and system drives
surpasses all other portables and even the greater majority of desktops.
In the MEDIAMACH, the system is designed so that the hardware necessary
for production plus the CD-ROM reside in the CoMPosERSLIcE and the
presentation hardware resides in the PRESENTATIONPLAYER. After a
presentation has been developed using the entire MEDIAMACH system, the
COMPOSERSLICE may be removed and left behind for maximum comfort and
convenience on the road.

Multimedia Computing

While multimedia presentations have become enchanting mixtures of video,
sound and graphics, building a system that includes the authoring
software, the CD-ROM, the sound board, the video board, etc., etc., has
become a nightmare. Anyone who has ever added even one single board to a
PC knows the hassle. In MEDIAMACH, all of these problems and more have
been handled. Dolch multimedia experts have tested the boards, run the
software and then put them all together in an amazingly complete
multimedia production and delivery system that is ready to go.

Video Capture

Dolch Computer Systems is the only multimedia computer manufacturer to
support all of the major video compression and playback standards.
Available are PRESENTATIONPLAYERs and COMPOSERSLICEs for the industry de
facto standard DVI technology, the increasingly popular AVI standard, and
the new high performance JPEG standard. A PRESENTATIONPLAYER is also
offered for MPEG playback, the newest and most efficient of the video
compression technologies. Each compression technique has a unique set of
features, benefits and limitations. With the widest choice in the
industry, Dolch multimedia experts can help the user select the video
compression technology best suited for the particular application.

Superior On-Board Sound

Multimedia applications have had a profound impact on the sound
requirements of a presentation delivery system. Particular attention was
paid to this requirement during initial design of MACH. When the computer
is setup for use, a channel exists between the fold out screen and the
upright standing case. This channel is specifically designed to act as an
"acoustic transformer" which significantly increases sound power. The
amplification gained by impedance transfer is similar in nature to the
gain achieved by a simple cone, such as a megaphone. The result is
high-quality, room-filling sound without the need for external speakers or
sound equipment. "No ordinary computer, desktop or portable, produces the
sound quality of the MACH," according to Volker Dolch, company president.

High Resolution Touch Screen

Option Touch sensitivity on a portable is truly the next step in the
evolution of mobile presentation computers. Multimedia is a complex mix of
audio, video and graphics that is typically navigated with a mouse through
pull-down windows and on-screen buttons. Dolch's TOUCH & SHOW high
resolution touch screen option allows presenters to navigate with the
simple, natural pointing of a finger.

Rugged

For the ultimate in lightweight strength and toughness, going well beyond
the possibilities of molded plastics, the MACH enclosure is fabricated
from aircraft alloy and covered by a shock absorbent rubber compound.
Inside the enclosure all system components are individually suspended and
shock mounted for even further protection. The sturdy, lightweight MACH
platform weighs in at less than 13 pounds.

Liquid Cooled

To gain maximum performance in the smallest possible space, MACH was
designed with cooling techniques used previously only in supercomputing
environments. All major heat producing elements conduct heat to cold
plates through a highly heat-transmissive fluorocarbon liquid. The plates
are cooled by "Vertical Channelled Drafting" which is commonly known as
the "Chimney Effect." In addition to allowing the highest performance in
the smallest space, liquid cooling does away with the steady shrill noise
of commonly used cooling fans. A temperature controlled fan is available
for use in extreme environments or in the case of extreme system
expansion. Heat plays a major role in the deterioration of electronic
circuits, and the novel cooling system of the MACH provides a significant
increase in system reliability in addition to the performance benefits.

Best Display Technology

One of the hallmarks of a Dolch power portable is the brilliant colored TFT
display. Dolch introduced the first active matrix VGA color portable in
June of 1990, and the third and newest generation of this technology in
early 1992. Using Chips and Technologies' latest flat panel controller and
a proprietary color generation algorithm yields a dazzling palette of
185,193 colors. The large 10.4-inch display exhibits a contrast ratio of
over 60:1 and a clarity which surpasses all but the highest performance
CRT displays. And now Dolch is able to offer, as an option, the economical
yet brilliant 227,000 color, 9.5-inch, double scan STN display for
applications where all the full motion video capability of the TFT display
is not required. Nothing less than a revolution in passive matrix
technology, the new STN panel gives near TFT performance at a fraction of
the cost.

Form Follows Function

In modern high performance design, the unquestioned maxim is function
determines the form or shape of the package. The Dolch designers, trained
in Europe with experience that includes high performance automobile
design, brilliantly exhibit this strategy in the packaging of the MACH
family of power portables. The original design parameters specified the
highest performance CPUs, the best on-board sound quality and the smallest
foot print possible for the mobile site worker. In addition, this new
power portable had to be massively expandable without becoming cumbersome.
The upright standing style of the MACH case provided the answers to each
and every one of these design questions, without compromise. In the design
of the MACH-package, the Dolch engineers displayed a thorough
understanding of the physical sciences as well as the requirements of a
true power portable. "No other style of case, such as the common
clamshell, could possibly deliver the performance or the scalability of
the MACH," according to Mr. Dolch.

Powerful

Over the past five years, Dolch Computer Systems has consistently led the
industry in high performance portable computing. The high performance
offerings on the MACH platform include 486 DX CPUs running at 33 MHz and
DX/2s to 66 MHz. System memory is expandable to 32 MByte and hard drives
are available to 1 GByte.
