FIFTH GENERATION SYSTEMS ANNOUNCES FASTBACK PLUS 6.0

New Version Offers Simplified Interface, Increased Network Support, And
Virus Protection

BATON ROUGE, La., May 18, 1993 -- Fifth Generation Systems today announced
Fastback Plus 6.0, the latest version of its best-selling DOS backup
program. Fifth Generation also revealed a new, aggressive pricing
structure. Fastback Plus DOS, Windows, and Macintosh will now sell for
$149, a $40 reduction from the previous price. In addition, the company
will offer users of competitive products upgrades to Fastback Plus 6.0.

"Fastback has always been the market leader in backup," said Barry L.
Bellue, Sr., President and CEO. "In this version, we strengthened its
leadership in three ways. First, we Simplified the interface. Second, we
added security and network features. Third, we reduced the price point. We
invited users with various levels of computer experience to our home
office, where they participated in 30 days of interface design and
usability testing. Fastback Plus 6.0 is based on their concept of an ideal
backup utility, both in technological superiority and ease of use."

Fastback Plus 6.0 offers an interface reminiscent of previous versions of
the product. It also provides virus detection, enhanced tape support, and
powerful network functionality.

New features of Fastback Plus 6.0 include:

* INTERFACE ENHANCEMENTS - Fastback Plus 6.0 features a simplified
interface designed by users. On a single screen, users can select files by
typing in specs or by clicking on a directory tree. The Express menu now
includes improved screens, simplified file selection, and a Compare
function.

* VIRUS PROTECTION -- Fastback Plus 6.0 includes the scanner portion of
Untouchable, Search and Destroy, recently named the top virus scanner on
the market by International Computer Security Association. Users can scan
for viruses, on the fly during the backup operation, a feature unique to
Fastback Plus 6.0. The virus scan's speed exceeds 200 Mb/minute.

* SUPPORT FOR SCSI DEVICES - Fastback Plus now offers the most extensive
tape support on the market. In addition to QIC 40/QIC 80 tape drives, it
supports large capacity SCSI tape devices using either controller cards
with the ASPI interfaces such as Adaptec, a Microchannel bus, or a Future
Domain SCSI card.

* BACKUP TO TAPE DRIVES ACROSS NETWORKS - enables users to back up their
desktops to tape drives connected to other desktops across networks.
Administrators can schedule unattended backups of users' machines to tape
drives during off hours.

* NOTEBOOK BACKUP - Fastback Plus 6.0 is the only utility that enables
users to backup notebooks to any device accessible to their desktop
computer.

* ENHANCED USER ASSISTANCE - Fastback Plus 6.0 contains an information line
at the bottom of each screen that provides a description of whatever
operation or option the user currently has highlighted. Fastback Plus 6.0
also includes a backup tutorial and a restore tutorial to walk new users
through the procedures.

* FILE VIEWER - allows users to view the contents of ASCII files before
backing them up.

"Fastback Plus 6.0 is as simple as previous versions of Fastback but with
much more functionality," said Sandra Lyle, Fastback Plus product line
manager. "For simplicity, we now list the Backup and Restore operations as
separate menus. At the same time, we surpassed the virus protection
offered by competitive products, addressed the needs of our network users,
added the most extensive tape support on the market, and provided backup
for notebook users."

"Fastback Plus 6.0 is the fastest, most complete, most reliable, and safest
backup program in the industry," said Richard Eckert, a participant in
Fifth Generation's usability testing. "I know of no other software
corporation that has been more sensitive and responsive to their
customers. Usability participants, representing a wide variety of
customers, told them what we wanted in a backup product, and they
responded with a product that is a direct reflection of our
specifications."

Bellue stated, "Our willingness to listen to customers has always
distinguished us from the competition. When we expand our backup line
further this year, each new version will also be designed with hands-on
customer input."

Fastback Plus 6.0 requires an IBM PC/XT/AT or compatible, 640K RAM, MS/PC
DOS 3.3 or higher, and a hard drive. It is completely compatible with MS
DOS 6.0. Version 6.0 supports any SCSI device using a controller card with
an ASPI interface such as Adaptec, as well as Future Domain SCSI cards and
the Microchannel bus SCSI cards. Fastback Plus also backs up to QIC 40 and
QIC 80 tape drives and 2.88Mb floppy drives.

Fastback Plus 6.0 is available through distributors and most retail outlets
at a suggested retail price of $149. Site licenses are also available.
Registered users can upgrade for $49, and upgrades will be offered for $69
for DOS 6.0 users and for users of competitive products such as Norton
Utilities, Norton Desktop, Norton BackUp, Central Point BackUp, and PC
Tools.
