Horizons Technology Launches Programmer's Development Tool with Fuzzy
Search Capabilities

San Diego, June 10, 1993-- Horizons Technology announced today the
availability of its Fuzzy Search Engine Developer's Kit, which allows
software developers to embed a cost-effective information search and
retrieval tool as a native feature in DOS or Windows applications.

By embedding the Fuzzy Search Engine's information retrieval capabilities
into an application, developer's can capitalize on that functionality,
which will be a useful and welcome tool for any end user who has
experienced the frustration of spending hours searching fruitlessly for a
file. From locating misplaced files in a DOS subdirectory to finding words
or phrases in a document, applications with the Fuzzy Search Engine will
allow users to precisely control which files to search and view.

Powerful and Flexible Search Parameters:

The unique fuzzy search algorithm helps users search and find words,
phrases, or both, despite missing, extra, or out-of-position characters.
The Fuzzy Search Engine can locate files anywhere on a disk or network,
and users can also search for specific names or phrases within a file.

With the Fuzzy Search Engine in a developer's application, users will be
able to adjust the "fuzziness" level of their search queries, and be able
to find close matches even when words are misspelled or missing. Unlike
traditional directory tools that search for exact text strings, the Fuzzy
Search Engine lets users search and find that important piece of
information, even when users don't know exactly what to look for.

Fuzzy Search Application Program Interface (API) calls can be included in
the developer's existing source code to add fuzzy searching capabilities
to any DOS or Windows application. The mechanics of fuzzy searching are
handled entirely by the Fuzzy Search Engine library modules. All a
developer needs to consider is the selection and syntax of the API calls
to be used in their program.

"The Fuzzy Search Engine Developer's Kit is an ideal complement to any
stand-alone or networked application that creates, manipulates or
otherwise uses unstructured or structured text," said product manager
Shelley Draminski. "Applications such as word processors, structured Data
Base Management Systems with free text of memo fields, OCR software, and
vertical applications including legal, medical, library or financial
systems, can all be enhanced by integrating the Fuzzy Search Engine's
information retrieval capability. We've made fuzzy search technology
affordable compared to other systems, which can cost $20,000 or even much
more."

Fuzzy Search Engine Capabilities:

* Accepts Boolean logic (and, or, not)
* Allows proximity searching
(find "algorithim" within ten words of "fuzzy")
* Understands ASCII (extended and OEM) or EBCDIC text.
* Searches for numbers as text or by the numeric string's value,
allows searches for numbers that are close to the search
  target numerically.

Selectable Features:

* Deals with common typing errors.
* Supports "sound-alike" character searches
* Provides special Optical Character Recognition search features
that are tuned to detect the most common OCR scanning problems.

Benefits of Using the Fuzzy Search Engine:

* Easily embed powerful information retrieval functionality within any type
of application.

* Benefit from cost-effective turnkey developer's kit for DOS and Windows
stand-alone and networked applications.

* Gain use of flexible search parameters -- single word or phrase, Boolean,
wild card, proximity, or combine these with "fuzzy" search capability for
close matches.

* On-the-fly or indexed search capability.

* For networked applications, the powerful "index merge" function allows
combining search indexes from multiple networked machines to speed up the
indexing of large amounts of data on a network.

* Perfect for any application that creates, uses or searches text: imaging,
document management, word processing, and contact management.

The Fuzzy Search Engine Developer's Kit comes with comprehensive tools:

* Development object code library compatible with the most popular C
compilers.

* Development dynamic link library (DLL) compatible with most Windows
development environments.

* Complete documentation describing the Fuzzy Search Engine's features,
usage description, plus sample source code.

The Fuzzy Search Engine Developer's Kit is priced at $3,995, plus variable
run-time fees.

System Requirements:

For Development Systems: IBM AT or 100% compatible with a minimum of 640KB
of memory, 5MB of available disk space. DOS application development
requires a C compiler, (e.g. Borland C++ 3.0+) (large memory model on all
compilers). Windows application development requires a Windows development
environment (e.g. Windows SDK 3.0+, Borland C++ 3.0+) (large memory model
on all compilers). For systems on which the Fuzzy Search Engine
applications will run: IBM PC or 100% compatible with a minimum of 640KB
of memory and DOS 3.0+, or for Windows applications, Windows 3.0+.
