Apple Expands its Family of LocalTalk Connectors

Dateline: CUPERTINO, California -- June 29, 1993

Description:

Apple Computer, Inc. announced today the availability of the Apple
LocalTalk RJ-11 Connector, an easy and affordable way to build and expand
networks of Macintosh computers and printers. The connector, when used
with the AppleTalk network software that is built into every Macintosh
computer, allows users to communicate, exchange files and share printers
with other users over a LocalTalk network.

The Apple LocalTalk RJ-11 Connector will connect any Macintosh computer or
LaserWriter printer to a LocalTalk network using unshielded twisted-pair
(UTP) cable. UTP cable, which is used with most standard telephone
systems, is inexpensive, easy to install and configure, and popular for
use in local area networks. The connector is available in two versions,
which will be sold separately. The DIN8 connector plugs into the
minicircular DIN-8 serial port on a computer or printer, while the DB-9
version of the connector is designed for use with early-model Macintosh
computers or printers. The LocalTalk RJ-11 connector is also compatible
with most of the similar connectors currently available.

The latest connector expands Apple's current family of LocalTalk connectors
and cables, including the LocalTalk Locking Connector Kit, which uses
shielded twisted pair cabling in both DB-9 and DIN-8 versions and the
LocalTalk Locking Cable Kit (available in 10 and 25 meter lengths).
LocalTalk is Apple's affordable and easy-to-configure network cabling
system that reliably transmits information at 230.4 kilobits per second.

Availability and Pricing:

The Apple LocalTalk RJ-11 Connector, which comes with a two-meter length of
cable, is currently available from Apple at a manufacturer's suggested
retail price of US$39. For more information, call the Apple User
Assistance Center at 1-800-SOS-APPL. To place an order, call The Apple
