Newton to Have Seamless Connection to Both PC and Macintosh

NEW YORK, NY--June 29, 1993--Apple Computer, Inc. today announced the
Newton Connection Kit, which enables intelligent transfer,
synchronization, back up and updating of information between a Newton
device and a PC or a Macintosh personal computer. The announcement of
Newton Connection Kit underlines the broad communications capabilities of
Apple's forthcoming Newton family of products.

Newton Connection is based upon Apple's unique "Smart Synchronization"
technology which automatically updates information between the Newton and
a PC or a Macintosh. Any changes made to the information on the Newton or
on the personal computer are automatically synchronized and updated
between the two when they are connected. In fact, Newton Connection is
designed to automatically track deleted information and keep a copy of it
in an archive file on the personal computer just in case it is needed
later.

Newton Connection will also include a set of complementary Newton
applications intended to enable users to create, view and edit Newton
information on a PC or a Macintosh, even when the computer is not
connected to a Newton. This information--notes, letters, name cards,
action lists, appointments, etc.--can be automatically synchronized and
updated between the personal computer and the Newton the next time they
are connected.

In addition, Newton Connection is designed to enable users to easily backup
their Newton information onto their personal computer's hard disk for safe
keeping and if necessary restore it easily. Newton Connection will also
let users add additional functionality to their Newton by enabling them to
install optional packages--such as additional applications or system
enhancements-- from their personal computers.

Apple also plans to introduce a "professional" version of the Newton
Connection kits that includes additional information translation
capabilities. These new information translators will enable users to
directly share their Newton information with popular Windows and Macintosh
graphics, word-processing, spreadsheet, database and PIM (Personal
Information Management) applications. This enables users to use their
everyday desktop applications to track their Newton information.

"Newton Connection is a significant improvement on the handheld to desktop
connectivity packages on the market today," said Michael Tchao, Newton
Product Line Manager, Apple Computer. "We have designed the Newton
environment around the concept of integrated communication. Newton
Connection demonstrates that we have created a platform that can
intelligently communicate and coexist with both the PC and the
Macintosh."

Newton Connection will include software, serial cable, and a user's manual.
Separate Newton Connection kits will be available for Newton connectivity
either to a Windows PC or to a Macintosh.

Newton Connection has been developed by Apple in co-operation with
Traveling Software, of Bothell (WA).

Pricing and availability for Newton Connection is anticipated to be
announced at the launch of the first Newton product later this summer.
