NORTON UTILITIES OFFERS UNSURPASSED SUPPORT FOR COMPRESSED DRIVES
--Norton Utilities 7.0 & DOS 5.0, Perfect Companions--

CUPERTINO, Calif. -- May 19, 1993 -- Symantec Corporation's (NASDAQ:SYMC)
Norton Utilities, known for its unsurpassed protection capability for data
recovery on standard drives. now extends this protection to compressed
drives in the recently announced version 7.0. Norton Utilities 7.0 (NU
7.0) is the only software available that automatically recovers lost,
damaged and crosslinked files on DOS 6.0 DoubleSpace, Stacker and
SuperStor compressed drives, and provides hardware diagnostics that
thoroughly test all vital system components before new software such as
major applications or compression technology is installed.

"The use of compression technology creates new demands for utilities," said
Gordon E. Eubanks, Jr., Symantec's president and CEO. "NU 7.0 meets the
needs for more sophisticated systems by providing data recovery,
protection and optimization of compressed data, and completely supports
the MS-DOS 6.0 memory manager and the compressed drive format. Although I
use DOS 6.0 frequently and haven't experienced any of the reported
problems, NU 7.0 provides system support to all users for testing and/or
running DOS and Windows software."

Norton Utilities 7.0 Benefits for DOS 6.0 Users

Compressed drives have as much potential for file system errors as standard
drives. The risk that compression technology represents is due to
additional data structures that increase the potential for problems.
Errors on compressed drives tend to be more exaggerated because a small
amount of damage can affect a larger portion of a compressed file. NU 7.0
provides the safest computing environment available with exclusive
recovery and repair functions unique to each of these compression
technologies.

"The Norton Utilities 7.0 is a great complement to DoubleSpace and MS-DOS
6.0, providing an enhanced feature set for users," said Brad Silverberg.
vice president, Microsoft Systems Group.

BENEFITS OF NU 7.0 FOR COMPRESSED DRIVES Errors on compressed drives are
more likely to affect users than on standard drives. NU 7.0 offers several
easy ways to recover lost, damaged and crosslinked files on compressed
drives, enabling NU 7.0 users the opportunity to keep their PC systems in
top operating condition.

Norton Disk Doctor To maintain system integrity on compressed drives, users
should run Norton Disk Doctor everyday at bootup. Norton Disk Doctor
contains nine automated repair functions specific to compressed drives.
The decompression test checks the validity of each sector of data and
deletes only the damaged cluster. Early detection can prevent more
widespread or severe problems later.

DOS 6.0 error messages "Sector Not Found" or "General Failure" may signify
corrupt compressed data. A Norton Disk Doctor surface scan of the host and
decompression test of the compressed drives will repair the physical
problems on the host drive and the compression problems on the compressed
drive.

Crosslinked Files

The DOS 6.0 error message "A CVF (compressed volume file) is damaged"
generally indicates crosslinked compressed sectors. A user normally sees
this message at bootup, although the drive is still accessible. Norton
Disk Doctor detects crosslinked files and lost allocation units (lost
clusters) and recommends a repair solution.

Defragging Compressed Drives

NU 7.0's Speed Disk provides the only defragger solution that unfragments
large hard disks (up to 2 gigabytes) and compressed drives. The Norton
Disk Doctor's decompression test should be initiated before running Speed
Disk to ensure data integrity on compressed drives.

Although Speed Disk is the fastest utility available for defragmentation
for either standard or compressed drives, the initial defragmentation of a
compressed drive may take some time. Use of the Speed Disk configuration
options and regular passes of Speed Disk can greatly reduce the processing
time of later runs. For example, one Speed Disk configuration option lets
the user group files that will not become fragmented (such as executables)
together at the front of the disk. This area of the disk can then be
processed very quickly during subsequent uses of Speed Disk.

Recovering Lost CMOS Configurations

Lost CMOS configurations are a problem on systems with both standard and
compressed drives. The best insurance against losing CMOS configurations
is to backup the configurations. Users should create a Rescue Disk during
the installation of NU 7.0 to allow NU 7.0's Rescue and Restore feature to
automatically recreate the user's CMOS configuration if needed.

If CMOS configurations, boot record or system files have been lost, and the
user has to boot from a plain bootable floppy disk, the required device
drivers to access compressed drives must be available. The NU 7.0 Rescue
Disk made during installation automatically ensures that this happens.

Norton Cache

When using NU 7.0's NCache, it is recommended that the user "flush" the
cache before turning off the system to avoid losing data. At the "C:"
prompt, type "NCache /Dump" to ensure that everything in the cache is
saved to disk. Alternatively, NCache can be configured to output any
delayed writes before returning to the DOS prompt.

Norton Utilities 7.0 runs on IBM PC AT, PS/2 or 100% compatibles, DOS 3.3
or higher and requires 640KB RAM (1MB recommended). The program offers
network support with special features for NetWare installations and is
fully compatible with Windows 3.0 and 3.1.
