Pixar Releases Photographic Texture Collection

Pt. Richmond, CA (April 1, 1993) -- Pixar today announced the release of
their private collection of high-quality photographic textures. The
digital library, called Pixar One Twenty Eight, was developed within Pixar
for use in their signature images and films.

Unlike other libraries that were created from video or second source
images, each Pixar One Twenty Eight texture was designed for use in
computer graphics from its inception. Each photograph was created by a
professional photographer from an original material sample, photographed
in a controlled on-site environment and then processed in a
custom-equipped texture laboratory.

The Pixar library of textures includes one hundred twenty eight unique
512x512x24 bit images on a CD-ROM. In addition, Pixar One Twenty Eight
includes 128x128x8 bit versions of these images that can be used for
placement, fills or on-screen presentations. The libraries plug-in
displays a thumbnail sample of each image making it easy to locate and
select the desired textures. Photoshop and PhotoStyler plug-ins allow
users to tile textures into any selected area.

Pixar One Twenty Eight incorporates a patented technology that allows the
textures to be tiled seamlessly. As a result, the textures, when aligned
and tiled to cover a large area, will appear as a single smooth image
without breaks or lines. The Pixar folding process preserves the integrity
of the original data; therefore, the textures can be scaled or post
processed without any degradation in quality. The tiling technology makes
the computer artist more productive by saving both time and disk space.

Pixar One Twenty Eight contains 13 categories of textures. They are:
bricks, fabrics, fences, floors, ground covers, metals, roofs, sidings,
animal skins, stones, walls, woods and miscellaneous. Pixar One Twenty
Eight textures are available as TIFF files and can be used as backgrounds
or fills in graphic or presentation applications. The images can be used
by any application that can read TIFF files and can be used to create
realistic texture maps in 3D applications such as Showplace and Pixar
Typestry through Glimpse.

Pixar One Twenty Eight plug-ins are available for Photoshop on Macintosh
and Photoshop and PhotoStyler on Windows. The images can be accessed by
any player that can read an ISO 9660 CD format.

Pixar One Twenty Eight is now available through standard distribution
channels and retails for $299.
