IBM PC COMPANY INTRODUCES ADAPTER THAT TURNS PC INTO TELECOMMUNICATIONS
CENTER

SOMERS, N.Y., May 25, 1993 . . . The IBM Personal Computer Company
introduced today a communications adapter that has the ability to turn a
personal computer into a complete telecommunications center.

"The IBM WindSurfer Communications Adapter utilizes Mwave technology to
consolidate the separate data/FAX modem, audio, voice messaging and
telephone answering functions into a single add-in card," said Steven L.
Starkey, brand manager of IBM's Features and Options organization. "This
consolidation of functions enables the WindSurfer to perform its many
tasks concurrently, without burdening the main system processor, and
allows programs to run effortlessly in the background."

The WindSurfer is one of IBM's first products to utilize the advanced Mwave
Digital Signal Processor (DSP) technology developed by the Mwave Alliance
Partners of IBM, Texas Instruments and Intermetrics.

"It is the Mwave DSP processor and the on-board Mwave/OS (operating system)
that allows the consolidation of functions normally found on separate
personal computer add-in adapters," Starkey said. "As a result, there's no
more waiting for a FAX to transmit before you can get back to work," he
added.

The WindSurfer is a 16-bit ISA busmaster adapter that occupies a single
full-size slot in ISA or EISA systems with a 386SX or greater processor.
It operates under Microsoft Windows 3.1 (enhanced mode) and complies with
the audio specifications of the Multimedia PC Marketing Council (MPC),
Inc.

WindSurfer's 16-bit digital-to-analog converters (DACs) provide CD quality
stereo sound with sample rates up to 44.1 RHz. And its superior Musical
Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) sound comes from digital samples of
actual instruments instead of the combination of noises to make music, a
common technique in today's sound boards.

To protect the user's investment, the WindSurfer adapter can easily acquire
new functions, made possible by the programmable Mwave DSP, through
software upgrades. Functions such as higher speed modems, speech
recognition, text-to-speech, image compression/decompression and even
motion video acceleration are possible without changing the hardware.

Each adapter comes packaged with software applications and functions which
allow the user to immediately take advantage of WindSurfer. The package
includes two software programs: Trio DataFAX Lite for Windows for FAX
processing and a PRODIGY service membership for modem processing. In
addition, it includes a telephone answering function called PhoneFX. Most
existing COM port applications using the Hayes AT command set will
function thru the standard UART services provided in the WindSurfer
Communications Adapter.

IBM also is offering this product to the OEM market.

It is IBM's intent to offer a Micro Channel version of this adapter at a
later date.
