BARR DOUBLES THROUGHPUT OF SDLC GATEWAYS

(Gainesville, FL - June 28, 1994) Barr Systems has introduced two new
products that can double the throughput of SNA gateways over SDLC links.
T1-SYNC for NetWare for SAA upgrades synchronous links from Novell's SNA
gateways, while T1-SYNC for SNA Server does the same for the Microsoft
gateway. Each product consists of a high-speed synchronous adapter and
drivers for the target gateway.

Although SNA Server and NetWare for SAA are considered to be two of the
most powerful SNA gateways on the market, neither can simultaneously send
and receive SDLC data without the new Barr products. This capability,
enabled via a parameter known as DATMODE=FULL within a mainframe's
Virtual Telecommunications Access Method (VTAM) configuration, can double
SDLC throughput without any other changes to modems or telecommunications
lines. Independent testing has shown that the DATMODE=FULL protocol can
increase throughput over SDLC links by 100 percent or more.

The DATMODE=FULL protocol was defined by IBM shortly after the original
SDLC protocol was created. It is supported by VTAM and is currently used
for most mainframe-to-mainframe SDLC links. To this day, however, very few
SNA gateways or other downstream products have implemented it. Barr has
included this high- performance capability in its Remote Job Entry (RJE)
products since 1989. Since most communications lines and modems already
support full-duplex operation, users can enjoy the increased throughput
simply by choosing the Barr product and changing one VTAM parameter in
their host configuration.

Tony Barr, President of Barr Systems, said, "The opportunity to double SDLC
throughput for such a small investment is truly compelling. Without
DATMODE=FULL support, you are just throwing away bandwidth." Mr. Barr says
he continues to be amazed that so few other products offer this
high-performance feature. The new products allow every NetWare for SAA
and SNA server gateway to enjoy this improved level of performance.

For a limited time, Barr's T1-SYNC for SNA Server and T1-SYNC for NetWare
for SAA will be available with DATMODE=FULL at any data rate up to 2.048
Megabits per second for $700. After that, premiums will apply for
high-speed configurations. The price includes the Barr T1-SYNC high-speed
synchronous ISA-bus adapter board and all software required for use with
the Microsoft SNA Server or NetWare for SAA. T1-SYNC for SNA Server is
available now, and T1-SYNC for NetWare for SAA will be available in July,
1994.
