ADAPTEC ENHANCES PRICE/PERFORMANCE OF ITS VL-to-SCSI-2 HOST ADAPTERS BY UP
TO 50 PERCENT

RISC-based AHA-2840A Family Delivers Unprecedented Performance to VL
Systems

MILPITAS, Calif. -- June 27, 1994 -- Adaptec (NASDAQ:ADPT), a market leader
in input/output (I/O) technology, today introduced an enhanced family of
Small Computer System Interface (SCSI) host adapters providing
price/performance improvements of up to 50 percent over previous versions.
The AHA-2840A family, Adaptec's next generation of its popular
VL-to-SCSI-2 host adapters, delivers this outstanding performance to
multitasking desktop, workstation or any multiple-disk environment under
DOS/Windows, Windows NT, NetWare, OS/2, SCC UNIX and UnixWare operating
systems.

Improved Price/Performance

When it was first introduced to the market in 1993, the AHA-2840VL family
was the highest performance SCSI host adapter in its class. With highly
integrated hardware and enhanced software, the family is now even more
powerful and less expensive to manufacture. Designed for systems
integrators or PC specifiers who use the VL-Bus to bolster multitasking
I/O performance, the AHA-2840A combines outstanding performance with
guaranteed system compatibility and easy installation.

"Using the same RISC-based SCSI I/O technology as its predecessor, the
AHA-2840 family has been redesigned to boost system performance by an
additional 35 percent in multitasking applications like workstations and
file servers," said John Hamm, corporate vice president and general
manager of Adaptec's Enterprise Computing business unit.

PhaseEngine Technology Boosts Performance

The AHA-2840A's high performance is attributed to its proprietary
PhaseEngine technology, an on-board RISC processor which supports up to
255 simultaneous SCSI commands.

Using PhaseEngine, the time required by the SCSI bus to carry out typical
commands, such as seeking and reading data, can be reduced by as much as
90 percent. With this reduced overhead time, the CPU is free to service
demanding I/O applications. As a result, data is transferred between the
VL system and its SCSI peripherals much faster than previous solutions,
thereby increasing overall system performance.

In addition to its impressive performance specifications, the AHA-2840A has
undergone thousands of hours of extensive testing for compatibility and
reliability (including Pentium machines), and comes with Adaptec's
BIOS-resident SCSI-Select utility which eliminates the need for jumpers or
switches when installing or adding peripherals.

PC Expo Debut

The AHA-2840A family of products will be demonstrated to end users for the
first time at PC Expo which takes place at the Jacob K. Javits Convention
Center in New York City, June 28-July 1, Booth #3678 on the main floor of
the convention center.

Pricing and Availability

The VL SCSI Master--a complete kit featuring the AHA-2840A, Adaptec EZ-SCSI
software, cable and documentation - is available now at a new suggested
retail price of only $349. The AHA-2840A family is also available to OEMs
in bulk and single packaging.
