APEX DATA DEBUTS CELLULAR DIRECT MODEM; SIGNS STRATEGIC ALLIANCE WITH
CELERITAS TECHNOLOGIES

PCMCIA Mobile Communications Connectivity Leader Provides Compatibility
With Cellular Phones and Eliminates Need For Data Interfaces; Alliance
Ensures Reliable Transmission Quality and Rapid Data Throughput

PLEASANTON, Calif. (6/27/94)-----With the introduction of its high
performance PCMCIA cellular direct modem, mobile connectivity leader Apex
Data, Inc. will enable easy and reliable data transmission and reception
via a portable computer and cellular phone. Cellular Direct will be on
display at PC Expo, June 28-30, at the Jacob Javits Convention Center, New
York, Booth # 971. Designed for simple plug-connection to the data access
port on a cellular phone, Apex's Cellular Direct modem eliminates the need
for bulky data interface boxes previously required to simulate dial tone
and provide connectivity. Additionally, the company announced a recently
formed strategic alliance with Celeritas Technologies, Ltd., which will
provide users of Apex's Cellular Direct modem rapid data throughput and
reliable transmission quality which reduces "air time
charges.

The Apex Cellular Direct Type ll PCMCIA cellular modem retails for $329
will be available beginning August 1,1994 through all Apex distributors
and resellers.

Since the advent of cellular phones, modems and portable computers, mobile
professionals wishing to communicate with the home office or customers,
simultaneously utilized the three technologies with mixed results. The
wide selection of cellular phone models, each with a dedicated data port
connection scheme, posed challenges to users searching for a match link
between the modem and the phone's data interface. More importantly, the
quality of cellular data transmission and reception would vary widely,
oftentimes resulting in slow and costly use of "air time" or inconsistent
signals causing an output or receipt of garbled information. Currently,
the market supplies cables with external, battery-powered data interfaces
that solve some of these inconveniences, yet pose others with interfaces
which are big and bulky.

Apex has overcome these challenges through engineering design innovations
and the company's strategic alliance with Celeritas. Through innovative
firmware design, the Cellular Direct stores information about the user's
cellular phone in Read Only Memory (ROM). This allows the modem to
instantly recognize the type of cellular phone being used upon power up
and automatically provides dialtone. The need for data interface boxes is
eliminated and the user no longer has to reboot the computer in the middle
of an application to deploy the modem. Apex also provides a series of
interface cables specifically designed for the connection between the
modem and various cellular phone offerings.

Through the alliance with Celeritas, Apex licensed that company's
Throughput XCellerator (TX-CEL) technology which improves cellular data
and fax throughput, regardless of error correction protocol used. The
technology also enhances existing cellular error correction methods by
eliminating numerous link layer transmission errors thereby reducing the
number of retransmissions. Additionally, the combination of Apex
engineering and TX-CEL technology enables the Cellular Direct modem to
transmit at considerably higher speeds than previously possible.

"There have always been distinct challenges in transmitting and receiving
data in the mobile computing/cellular telephone environments," said John
Chess, Apex president and cofounder. "Through our internal development
efforts and our alliance with Celeritas, we have conquered these issues
and taken a big step forward in increasing the productivity of mobile
professionals."

"With the performance achievement of Apex's Cellular Direct, enhanced by
TX-CEL technology, analog cellular networks can no longer be termed
'inherently hostile' to data and fax," said Glenn R. Ray, president of
Celeritas Technologies, Ltd.
