ARCADA DELIVERS FIRST BACKUP SOFTWARE FOR WINDOWS NT WORKSTATIONS

--Product Family Structure Allows Users to Pay Only for the Backup
Functions They Need --

LAKE MARY, Fla. (June 27, 1994) -- Arcada Software, Inc., the company that
developed such popular backup utilities as MaynStream, QICStream, EZTape
and Norton Backup, has announced workstation-based backup software for
Windows NT. Backup Exec for Windows NT: Workstation Edition gives Windows
NT users who do not need Windows NT Advanced Server-level backup features
an affordable, yet robust, suite of backup utilities to protect their
data.

In May, Arcada began shipping Backup Exec for Windows NT AS, the first
backup software for Windows NT Advanced Server users. While that product
can be used to backup data at the workstation level on Windows NT AS
Networks, it provides sophisticated network backup functions not required
to protect single-user data at the workstation, nor to backup data in
small workgroups where Windows NT workstation is configured as a file
server.

At a suggested retail price of $295, Backup Exec for Windows NT:
Workstation Edition provides a more cost-effective backup solution for
personal and small workgroup data than the $795 Windows NT Advanced Server
users pay for Arcada's Backup Exec for Windows NT AS.

"A recent PC Software Program Report from International Data Corporation
forecast 1994 unit shipments of Windows NT at 1.5 million, growing to 3.7
million by 1996," said David Krinker, Business Unit Director for Windows
Products at Arcada. "Many of those buyers will not be purchasing Advanced
Server. Although our Advanced Server product can be used to backup data at
the workstation level, we wanted to deliver a strong price/performance
backup value for protecting personal and small workgroup data in the
Windows NT environment. With this product launch, we are mirroring
Microsoft's move to address the distinct needs of defined sets of Windows
NT users," Krinker continued.

Primary Benefits

Backup Exec for Windows NT: Workstation Edition provides more sophisticated
data protection than is provided by the native backup utility in Windows
NT -- which was also developed by Arcada.

"Many people don't realize Arcada wrote the backup utility that is included
in Windows NT," said Kinker. "We clearly drive backup and storage
solutions in the Windows NT market, and currently offer the only solutions
for Windows NT backup at both the Advanced Server and workstation levels.
This workstation product completes our Windows NT product family by
addressing the needs of users backing up their own data. Backup Exec for
Windows NT: Server Edition already provides data protection for small to
medium LANs and Storage Exec protects enterprise-wide LANs and WANs."

Advanced features Backup Exec for Windows NT: Workstation Edition delivers
include:

* Scheduled/unattended backup using pre-defined "scripts" -- Using a
simple, graphics-based selection menu, users can create automatic backup
routines that will run at specified times without user interaction.

. Data compression -- To accelerate backup procedures and maximize the
efficient use of storage, users can choose to compress data before sending
it to the tape drive, or can use the compression features of tape drives
that offer them. Compression options are selected through a intuitive
"point-and-click" menu.

* Tape catalog on disk -- the software tracks which files are stored on
which tapes, so users who need to restore data do not need to search tapes
to find specific files.

* File versioning -- The software tracks all file versions that have been
saved to tape so that users can restore older file versions. For example,
a user could restore a departmental budget as it appeared three weeks
prior to the restore date.

* Open and skipped file processing -- To ensure complete backup, users can
set procedures for retrying files that were not backed up because they
were in use during the scheduled backup. Open files can be automatically
skipped, logged and batched for retry when the scheduled job is complete.

Availability and Pricing

Backup Exec for Windows NT: Workstation Edition has a suggested retail
price of $295 and will begin shipping in July.
